Only two weekends remain before Grow Native Nursery concludes its season, and we’re excited to showcase some exceptional offerings to wrap up the year on a high note!
This week, we present our stunning ferns, including the striking Birdfoot Fern, Pellaea mucronata!
Between 2019 and 2020, the Horticulturist Team at the California Botanic Garden, supported by the Saratoga Horticulture Research Endowment, undertook horticultural trials of six distinct species of our native chaparral
ferns. The goal was to identify native, low-water-use fern varieties suitable for the nursery trade.
The trials revealed that Pellaea mucronata exhibited "the highest adaptability among the ferns;" it demonstrated greater tolerance for clay soil and increased sun exposure compared to other species. In addition, weekly watering maintained its rich grey-green foliage throughout the year, making it a great fern for Southern California gardens.
Grab the Birdfoot Fern for your garden, along with our other remaining plants this Friday - Sunday, 9am-4pm.
