Only two weekends remain before Grow Native Nursery concludes its season, and we’re excited to showcase some exceptional offerings to wrap up the year on a high note!

This week, we present our stunning ferns, including the striking Birdfoot Fern, Pellaea mucronata!

Between 2019 and 2020, the Horticulturist Team at the California Botanic Garden, supported by the Saratoga Horticulture Research Endowment, undertook horticultural trials of six distinct species of our native chaparral
ferns. The goal was to identify native, low-water-use fern varieties suitable for the nursery trade.

The trials revealed that Pellaea mucronata exhibited "the highest adaptability among the ferns;" it demonstrated greater tolerance for clay soil and increased sun exposure compared to other species. In addition, weekly watering maintained its rich grey-green foliage throughout the year, making it a great fern for Southern California gardens.

Grab the Birdfoot Fern for your garden, along with our other remaining plants this Friday - Sunday, 9am-4pm.

Grow Native Nursery is open for just three more weekends before our season comes to a close! Therefore, we thought we'd end the season with some fun, uncommon plants! Each weekend we will be featuring small batches of interesting plants that you might not have seen on our shelves before (or very rarely). This weekend? The gorgeous Rose Mallow, Hibiscus lasiocarpos var. occidentalis!

Newly emerging from dormancy, this gorgeous hibiscus flower is a show stopper in any garden! It likes damp conditions due to it's natural tendency to grow around marshes and wet places around the Sacramento Valley region. At California Botanic Garden, you may have spotted it around our Emily's Reflecting Pond.

We have the Rose Mallow available in 4-inch options this weekend, as well as plenty of Milkweed still available. Grow Native Nursery is open Friday-Sunday, 9am-4pm. Stop in and say hello before we close for the summer!

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to our 2026 Milkweed, Monarchs, and Moms weekend at California Botanic Garden and Grow Native Nursery! We are thrilled that over 1,700 milkweeds went out into the local community as well as thousands of pollinator plants. 🌸 Our Nursery will remain open until the end of May so it's not too late to get milkweed if you need some!

For those inland, we've created a Milkweed Starter Guide to help get your milkweeds established. Have any questions? Our staff and volunteers are available to help at Grow Native Nursery Friday - Sunday, 9am - 4pm now through May 31st.

Happy Earth Day! At Grow Native Nursery we aim to help folks increase biodiversity through native plants so that bees, like this gorgeous Sweat Bee (subgenus Agapostemon), and other wildlife, have the resources they need. However, we couldn't do this without you! Thank you for planting native plants - Our staff hopes you have a wonderful Earth Day, and get a chance to go outside and enjoy 😀
