Look what Mike's Carnivores saw at Concourse E in the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport —Nepenthes sculptures! ✈️🌿

These bronze pitcher plant forms are part of “Ladies in Waiting” by artist Karen Rich Beall, and they’ve been there since 2002.

Fun facts:
• The sculptures are inspired by tropical pitcher plants (Nepenthes)
• Installed just outside the international arrivals/immigration corridor
• Part of Atlanta’s airport art program, bringing nature into a busy travel space

Next time you’re passing through ATL, keep an eye out—you might just spot carnivorous plants hiding in plain sight.

On Monday, after the ICPS Carnivorous and Exotic Plant Symposium and Expo had wrapped up, we made a journey out to Brunswick County, North Carolina to see some native carnivorous plants. While I've seen Sarracenia and Drosera in their native habitat here in Florida, I had never seen Dionaea Muscipula (Venus Flytraps) in their natural environment.

Seeing Venus flytraps naturally growing was truly something else and brings a whole new uniqueness to just how incredible and diverse this plant can be. Additionally, it was truly something else to see the amount of variety of Sarracenia species (Flava, Purpurea, etc) and Drosera occurring across just this single county.

Happy World Carnivorous Plant Day! Over the weekend we visited the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and of course we visited the carnivorous plants. The Sarracenia, Dionaea Muscipula, and Drosera Capensis were thriving.

Also just a little over a week until we will be at the International Carnivorous Plant Society - ICPS symposium in Kernersville, NC!

If you’ve seen these fuzzy guys crawling or falling from the trees lately, you aren’t alone! These are White-Marked Tussock Moth Caterpillars.

While they are a native species and an important part of our local ecosystem, they definitely don't want to be handled. Those "cool" tufts of hair are actually defensive bristles that can cause a nasty skin reaction if they make contact.

Swipe to the second photo to see what happened after one got under my shirt while I was in Safety Harbor. 😬 It irritated my entire right side from my hip to lower chest, requiring a week of prescription topical cream and anti-itch meds to clear up.

The Bottom Line: We love our native wildlife, but let's admire this one from a distance! Keep an eye out when walking under the trees—and maybe keep those shirts tucked in. 🌳👇
