The sheathing under your shingles is important—it’s the foundation of your roof! In Ohio, there are codes that require a solid surface for a new roofing system to be installed on. While we check attics during our initial inspections, sometimes the condition of the wood is unknown until we start pulling the old shingles off. This house required a re-deck {old wood torn out & new wood install} on the entire upper portion of the roof. With new sheathing, appropriate underlayment, and proper ventilation—this roof is now up to code & built to last! Best part? No more hail damage, which means no more leak risks. We LOVE a bold transformation & these HDZ charcoal shingles are it 🔥 The existing roof had 2 layers of shingles, which we know from our last post is not good ❌, and it had leaks. We had to replace TEN sheets of decking because of how bad the second layer suffocated the roof & the damage the leaks caused. Just as we said, a second layer doesn’t fix your problems, and it could actually make them worse! Fortunately, we were able to submit the extra cost of decking to the insurance company, so the homeowner will still only owe their deductible. Need to know if you have damage from the recent winds? People have asked if we can “just do a shingle over”, and the short answer is no. And you wouldn’t want any roofer to add layers for the following reasons:
1). Does not allow for proper ventilation, which traps heat & moisture—leading to your roof aging faster
2). Adds weight, which affects the structural integrity of your home
3). Is a bandaid to minor problems, which over time can turn into major, costly fixes!
4). Manufacturers won’t be able to honor warranties—shingles need to be installed on a solid nail-able surface and a second layer is neither of those 🙃
