Ok. Let's have some lumber school tonight. There is a lot of confusion of rough dimension versus dressed dimension. If you say 2 by 4. Rough dimension will give you true 2 inches by 4 inches. Dressed dimension will be 1 and 3/4 inches by 3 and 3/4 inches. Why? Not sure myself. But this is the industry standard. "Dressed" means that the lumber has been dried and planed, giving it the smooth finish. I deal with true dimensions. If you ask me for a 2 by 4, you're going to get a 2 by 4. I don't dry or plane my lumber. I sell my lumber by the thousand board foot. A board foot is thickness in inches times the width in inches times the length in feet divided by 12. I hope this helps.
