For many years I have said the ONLY predictable thing about a tree is its unpredictability. And in 44 years I have never lost control of a tree-until yesterday! John and I had a fairly small take down at one of his daughter's friends house. When I say small, the tree was only about 40 ft tall. It was a Mountain Ash, not totally dead, but diseased enough that it needed to come down. The issue here is that there was no way to get the bucket truck to the tree because the lawn is basically a swamp. We had waited until mid-winter to do it because we wanted frozen ground and snow cover to reduce the lawn damage. Well, let's say things didn't go as planned! The snow had insulated the ground enough that it never fully froze. We roped the tree off and hooked on the tractor. When I started to pull the tractor started digging holes in the lawn, and that was where it stopped! OK, now we have a problem. The tree was trying to fall away from the tractor, so we had to figure out a way to overcome the situation. Since I was using another tree as a sn**ch block, the tractor was actually beside the tree. I hooked a chain between the tree and the tractor, and using two chain binders proceeded to bring the tree back. We had a splitting wedge in the cut to help re-direct the tree as well. Once we freed the saw that was stuck I grabbed a smaller saw and proceeded to finish the cut. THAT was when all Hell broke loose! The tree spun on the stump more violently than I have EVER seen, and it fell faster than I have ever seen a tree fall in my life! But the biggest surprise is that it fell roughly at a right angle to where it should have gone! And it threw the butt 7 FEET away from the stump! Now as soon as I saw it start to go I took off, and luckily I ran in the right direction! It was still closer than I have ever come to being injured, and I don't care to repeat it! People, I have done this a LONG time and I am exceedingly careful about how I do things! So when I tell you to leave it to a professional, LISTEN TO ME!!! Even with all my experience I had a close call! I was lucky! Someone without my experience probably wouldn't have been so lucky!
