What ORGANIC means to us...........

This is the second of several posts where we will introduce you to our organic practices at the Nursery.

When organic fertilizer is used, you are feeding the microbes (bacteria and fungi) in the soil rather than directly feeding the plant. As the microbe population grows large, you now have a biologically active soil. This allows the plants to have a steady and diverse supply of nutrients, even between fertilizer applications. These soils allow the plants to better resist pest pressure and stress from heat and drought. At Pasquale's Nursery, we use organic fertilizers from a diverse collection of natural sources. This allows not only the application of the usual N-P-K, but also a wide range of micronutrients (Calcium, Zinc, Iron, Magnesium, Copper, et c.).

Visit our booth at the St. Clair Shores Farmers Market on May 18th or the Mt. Clemens Farmers Market on May 24th. We usually sell out after 2 markets, so to ensure your order, complete our pre-order form at:

Announcing 2025 Plant Lineup!

If you are not familiar with our small, family-run nursery, we sell only Heirloom Italian plants grown organically. Many of these hard-to-find tomatoes, peppers, etc. came to us from Italian families right here in Macomb County and have an origin story of how they were brought from the old county to the US. Below is a list of our products for this year. By tomorrow, our pre-order form will be live, and I will post the link. If you would like to visit us in person, we will be at the St. Clair Shores Farmers Market on May 18th and the Mt. Clemens Farmers Market on May 24. We usually sell out after just 2 markets, so the pre-order form will ensure you get what you are looking for.

Garden Year In Review - Gagootza!

Gagootza (aka Cucuzza or the Serpent di Sicilia) is a large gourd that will grow to 5-6 feet in length and as fat around as a bocce ball. Once mature, it becomes woody and unpalatable, but when picked immature (about 3 ft in length), it is delicious in soups, stews and sauces. We repurposed the kids' swing set this spring to serve as a gogootza trellis. These aggressive vines will grow a foot a day and quickly took over the entire swing set. The flowers are not only gorgeous, they are also edible - in fact the entire plant is edible. A Sicilian soup called tenerumi is made from the tender, young shoots. These were a lot of fun growing this summer.
We will have gagootza seedlings at our booth next spring at the SCS farmers market and the Mt. Clemens farmers market, or look for our pre-order form starting in January.

Over 200 pepper seeds passed across the potting bench today, all nestled in their warm, organic potting mix waiting for the magic (there might be a little science involved also) of germination.
