Leaking Chimney repair 👨🔧
We were called out to tuckpoint this chimney as another company claimed the mortar joints were causing water to get behind their flashing.
During inspection of the chimney, we discovered that the shingles had been improperly installed over the front pan flashing. As we lifted the shingles, it became clear that water was seeping behind them, leading to rusted nails and potential water damage.
To properly address the issue, we removed approximately three feet of shingles down from the chimney and up along both sides, continuing until no further rusted nails were visible. Once the area was cleared, we installed an ice and water shield around the base of the chimney, ensuring it extended up the sides and behind the flashing for added protection.
When reinstalling new shingles, we corrected the previous mistake by running the new shingles underneath the front pan flashing. This allows water to flow properly over the surface of the shingles, rather than getting trapped beneath them. This will prevent future water intrusion and protect the roofing system from further damage.
As we were originally called, we went ahead and grinded all the old mortar joints out to tuckpoint new mortar all the way around the chimney along with replacing some separating brick that caused concern.
