Do you ever worry about the trees looming over your house during a storm? Are you unsure if they are healthy or structurally sound? Here are a couple of issues to watch out for to be sure that your trees are strong.
First, be aware of codominant unions. Specifically if the union has a crack in it (Picture 1). Codominant unions are a weaker unions that have a tendency to fail (pic 2). This is primarily due to the included bark within the union that compromises some of the structural integrity.
Second, watch for cavities and rot in the tree (pic 3). Often times this rot is caused by open wounds from broken branches or poor pruning cuts. There are many causes of rot and cavities. One good sign of rot within a tree is fungus (pic 4). Tree rot will, overtime, erode the inside of a tree and cause a structural failure.
Be aware of your trees and the danger they pose. Take care of them before any damage is caused. These issues can be resolved by proper pruning, tree cabling/bracing, or tree removal.
