How neat is nature?? All three colors on one flower is a new one for me! These Dainthus are cute but another variety I dont plan on keeping in my garden due to its invasive nature to our area.

This morning, while cutting some flowers, I noticed that the Bachelor Buttons in my garden have started to go to seed. It made me realize there is a valuable teaching opportunity here. I bought these Bachelor Buttons as part of a wildflower/pollinator friendly blend from a big box store. Surprisingly, last year, I collected many of their seeds, and now I'm seeing a large number of them come back this season. It's a clear example of how invasive this flower can be, which is why I decided to cut them all down right now. I'd rather prevent the risk of having even more of them next season. The bonus is that my garden looks refreshed and can breathe again without the overwhelming presence of these flowers!

Did you know that Bachelor Buttons (Cornflowers), Baby's Breath, Dame's Rocket and Sweet Williams Catchflies are often sold as pollinator or wildflower mixes at big box stores? It's tempting to include these pretty little flowers in your garden, but here's something important to consider: if these flowers are not native or naturalized in your area, they can actually be classified as invasive species. What's more, our pollinators might not derive significant benefits from them. As much as I've enjoyed these pretty little flowers, I've come to realize the importance of phasing them out from my own pollinator garden. Taking a more mindful approach, I'm actively working towards cultivating native or naturalized plants that truly support and nourish our local pollinators. Excited to be working with Colorado Springs Gov this year to bring this dream into a reality!
