Should be able to start moving yard trees for the Fall season here in about 6 weeks. It is usually around the middle of October before it is safe to move trees like Oaks and Maples. Trees with needles like Norway Spruce can be moved most anytime but I do like to avoid the heat of summer.

Hopefully everyone has been diligent about keeping up with watering trees that have been transplanted in the last couple of years. Looks like we have another shot of hot and CONTINUED dry weather still ahead of us.

We need to keep those feeder roots nice and moist right up until the ground freezes. Speaking of freezing now would be a good time to renew the mulch around your trees. Mulch not only helps to keep the ground moist and cool in the summer but helps to protect the roots in the Winter as well.

With this heat wave make sure that you are keeping up on watering any trees planted in the last 5 years.

Usually after they get past the 3 year mark they are fairly safe until we hit a long dry spell and high temperatures.

With the heat wave and dry conditions we have now it would not be a bad idea to water your trees twice a week.

Keeping a good layer mulch around your trees not only looks nice but it helps to insulate the trees roots from the heat.

If you have transplanted trees don’t forget to water them!

Hopefully everyone has been doing this all along but we are in a drought and expected temps up around 90 degrees on the way!!

Check them often and make sure they are getting a good soaking when you water them!

With going into the hottest time of the year don’t be afraid to water them a couple times a week. Trees transpire moisture through their leave and they can lose a lot of water reserves in hot/dry weather.

Checked on those big Norway Spruce I moved into the nursery earlier this year and they are all doing great! I thought they would a little slow to take off due to their size but they all are already putting on new growth! They should be ready for new homes this Fall. I just want to make sure they get the care they need this summer before letting them go.

With the warm weather we had the hardwoods jumped out to a fast start with leafing out so any transplanting of those species will have to wait until this Fall when they start to go dormant. That is usually around mid October when the leaves start changing colors.

However conifers like Norway Spruce can still be moved.

If you have trees that have been transplanted in the last 2-3 years please make sure to continue watering them! After they have had a full 2 years in their new location and are doing well you can start to cut back on how often you water them but you still need to keep and eye on them and help them out during the heat of Summer/Early Fall.

High winds and hot Summer temps can kill a newly transplanted tree if they are short on water. They need a good 1" of natural rain or help from a lawn sprinkler every week the first 2 years after moving to their new location.

Adding a new layer of mulch each year will also help to conserve the water the roots need.

Frost is out of the ground and time to start planning where you need trees and how many.

Last year was a short Spring transplanting season.

Everything needs to come together at the same time to make transplanting tree’s successful.

The ground needs to dry up so the spade does not leave ruts in the tree fields or your yard and it needs to happen before Spring leaf out progresses to far.

If you’re thinking about getting trees this Spring we need to connect and get you on the list otherwise we won’t be able to make it happen until this coming Fall.
