Dr. Adams (our mushroom expert) showed us these little pre-printed notes that are used when collecting multiple species of mushrooms. I like the idea and can see it being adapted to harvesting herbs with some of the same information. But, as I was looking over the lists I thought "What is a gregarious habit? Do they mean outgoing and happy? How is it possible to tell?"

After a bit of research (thanks to the www) I discovered it's a term used for mushrooms growing in clusters or colonies (hmm, they must be happy with company.) The last word on that list, imbricate, is another botany term (which I also had to look up) that means an overlapping arrangement, like shingles on a roof.

The words in botany can be a bit overwhelming at first, but it's so nice to have a specific term to describe every little detail about plants and where they live. The Latin and Greek scientific plant names are challenging too. I like them as a proper introduction and for correct identification, but still affectionately call most plants by their nicknames.
