Before ➡️ After | Basement Utility Room Transformation

What was once a basic unfinished utility space with exposed ceilings, block walls, and a standard washer/dryer hookup… has now been completely reimagined into a functional, elevated walk-in closet with dual access.

The challenge on this project wasn’t just making it look good — it was about solving a layout problem intelligently.

The client’s primary concern was that their existing bedroom closet was too small. Instead of forcing more storage into a limited space, we took a different approach:

✔️ Opened up the block wall to connect the bedroom directly into the utility room
✔️ Created a true walk-in closet experience on the opposite side
✔️ Designed a secondary access point to the washer & dryer so guests can still use laundry without walking through the bedroom

Because we were cutting through structural block, this wasn’t just cosmetic work—

We properly:
• Installed a steel lintel above the new opening to support the load
• Took precise measurements to ensure structural integrity and clean transitions
• Reinforced everything to prevent cracking or shifting over time

From there, we elevated the entire space:

✔️ Clean drywall finish over block
✔️ Modern flooring for a warm, finished feel
✔️ Recessed lighting to brighten the space
✔️ Custom closet system with wood shelving + black hardware
✔️ Seamless flow from closet → bedroom

The end result is a space that feels like it was always meant to be there — not an afterthought.

What started as a cold, unfinished basement utility room with exposed mechanicals and a basic washer/dryer hookup…
is now a fully transformed, elevated walk-in master closet with integrated laundry.

This wasn’t just cosmetic — this was structural + functional redesign.

✔️ We cut through cinder block to connect the utility room to the adjacent bedroom
✔️ Installed steel lintels to properly support the structure and prevent cracking
✔️ Designed a layout that allows:
• Private access from the master suite
• AND shared access for guests — without walking through the bedroom

⚙️ BUILT WITH INTENTION

This space had low ceiling constraints, which meant:
• Every door had to be custom trimmed and fit
• Storage, shelving, and layout were all custom-built from scratch

We also:
✔️ Concealed the furnace + mechanicals for a clean, modern look
✔️ While still maintaining full service access (done right, not covered up)

🪵 CUSTOM DETAILS THAT SET IT APART

The client didn’t want an off-the-shelf look…

So we built a true custom butcher block top using:
✔️ Individual oak boards
✔️ Seamlessly crafted together for a solid, high-end finish

Paired with:
✔️ Clean shelving
✔️ Black hardware accents
✔️ Modern lighting
✔️ And a warm, functional flow
