Why use multiple overlapping shade sails?

Every deck has a different shape, sun exposure, and arrangement. For this project, the overlapping Commercial 430 sails were positioned to provide broad coverage across the seating, entertaining, and hot-tub areas—without enclosing the deck or taking away from the open-air experience.

The result is a temporary seasonal shade solution intended to withstand summertime wind loads while making more of the deck comfortable and usable.

Effective shade isn’t only about appearance—it’s about designing coverage around how the space will actually be used.

Shade when you want it. Open sky when you don’t.

This custom slide-on-wire retractable system uses fabric panels suspended from parallel wires within the existing pergola. The panels slide along the wires, allowing the homeowners to extend the canopy for shade or gather it back when they want more sunlight and an open view of the sky.

Made with Fawn Sunbrella fabric, the system adds flexible shade without permanently covering the pergola.

A rooftop deck with an incredible view should be enjoyed—not avoided because of the summer sun.

This custom Commercial 340 shade-sail system in Stone creates comfortable zones for reading, relaxing, sharing a meal, or entertaining friends. The sails reduce direct sunlight over areas where people gather, while the open sides preserve mountain views and an open-air feeling.

The shoemaker’s children finally got shoes—and the Strategic Designs Art Studio finally got paint!

After looking at the raw Hardie board for far too long, we gave the building a dramatic charcoal facelift. The new color emphasizes the A-frame architecture, complements the mountain setting, and gives the studio a finished look that feels much more like us.

We spend our days transforming spaces for our clients. It was finally time to show our own building a little love!

Before the color goes on, the strength and fit have to be built in.

These custom steel attachment details were fabricated in our Strategic Designs shop for an upcoming shade-sail installation. Welding joins the individual steel components into a single assembly, creating a direct path for transferring forces through the connection.

Why fabricate our own hardware? Every structure and shade system is different. Custom fabrication allows us to control the plate size, hole placement, attachment angle, and overall fit instead of trying to make generic hardware work in a location it was never designed for.

With the cutting, drilling, fitting, and welding complete, these pieces are headed to Tony at Premier Coating for surface preparation and powder coating. Then they will be ready for the jobsite.

The finished shade gets the attention, but details like these are where the real work begins.

Three custom shade sails. One beautifully transformed courtyard.

For this Boulder creative space, Strategic Designs designed a three-sail system with custom-fabricated attachment hardware. The sails overlap at different heights and angles to create generous shade while adding sculptural movement overhead.

The neutral fabric colors keep the courtyard feeling calm and inviting, while the layered shapes bring just enough energy to complement the creativity happening within the space.

Custom shade does more than block the sun—it can help establish how a space looks, feels, and functions.
