From the Ohio Herb Education Center.

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is an herbaceous perennial in the Borage Family, related to borage, forget-me-nots and lungwort. Members of this family are often rich in minerals, which they gather from the surrounding soils through deep root systems, preferring damp, rich and partly shaded locations. Comfrey grows quickly to a height of 4’, with large deep green leaves covered in rough hairs. The creamy purple flowers that appear in early to mid-summer are a great boon to pollinators, especially bumblebees. In traditional herbalism, the leaves and roots of comfrey have long been used both internally and externally to address a long list of complaints, including lung problems, digestive issues, broken bones, arthritis and skin conditions. However the leaves can be high in certain alkaloid compounds that can cause liver damage, so modern recommendations are for external use only. Leaving comfrey in place after the growing season is over in the garden can help enrich the soil for other plants.
