Since the advent of the suburban, middle class neighborhood, the finely manicured lawn was made popular to waste space on your property. This happened post World War II. This was seen as a symbol of wealth and prosperity post war… a way for all of us to tell each other “look how great we are doing as a country!” 🤣People began to grow less and buy from grocery stores more. Farming and growing, at least on a small scale became less popular and was thought of as something the lower class did to make it by. Of course there were always exceptions. 🌾🌾👨🌾
What we have created in our neighborhood has been interesting! We are growing hundreds of pounds of food for the local community right in our front yard for everyone to watch! They get to drive by to see the progress. We’ve created a way for conversations to start in our neighborhood. While walking neighbors walk by, we have great conversations. This creates something we are lacking in today’s world… community.
Meanwhile we have 3 types of support in our neighborhood…
1. The neighbor that supports what we are doing 100% and are customers. 🔥
2. The neighbor that doesn’t understand what we are doing and still talks to us. 🔥
3. The neighbor that hates everything we do because they think it’s going to lower their property value. 🔥
All of these neighbors make us want to do this even more! I think the benefits far outweigh any drawbacks for our neighborhood. By the way… property values have gone up 40% in our neighborhood since we’ve been growing in our front yard.
Use your grow space wisely and grow more food and less lawn!!
