One of the more serious problems with older furnaces is the lack of modern safeties.
This furnace was burning right out of the front, melting wiring and venting dangerous gas inside, and was still running. It was both plugged up, and had holes in the heat exchanger.
Keep safety in mind if you are an owner of old equipment, have them cleaned and inspected, and equip your home with carbon monoxide alarms that you know to work.
Keeping the unit serviced at most could save a life, at the least it can save you inconvenience of costly repair or being without heat.
And of course, updating to a new unit can save a great deal of money, and add a considerable amount of safety.
