UPDATE - UPDATE - UPDATE - UPDATE - UPDATE!!!!!

Hi folks -

I finally connected with a different company who will apply dust control using 38% LIQUIDOW™ Calcium Chloride. This is a high-performance, water-based solution (approx. 38% CaCi2
, 62% water) used primarily for dust control, base stabilization, and de-icing. It is a cost-effective, non-synthetic product derived from natural brine, ideal for unpaved roads. It is highly hygroscopic, absorbing moisture from the air to keep unpaved roads and parking lots damp, reducing dust. Typical application for dust control is 0.27 gallons per square yard.

The company providing the service is GREAT LAKES CHLORIDE and if you want their service and product, they've agreed to a price of $155 per 100ft. You may also order this in 50ft increments. But they're getting ready to send trucks to MoCo and would like to start applying material in the next week or two, so you have to jump on this FAST!!!!!! CALL SHELBY CHOBANY at 574-253-1053 ASAP. AND ... go get your required $20 permit at the MoCo Hwy Dept. - they can be reached at 765-362-2304. You can also download the application at https://www.montgomerycounty.in.gov/egov/documents/1754660207_71294.pdf and then send it in with your $20 to the address at the top of the application.

Please tell them you're a subscriber to this FB page! I've already placed my order and am headed to the Hwy Dept over my lunch hour to get my permit. More about Great Lakes Chloride at

Life doesn't stop at 32 degrees, but salt does. Great Lakes Chloride provides treatment for dust control, de-icing, concrete, and FDR.

UPDATE: I'm frantically searching for other dust control service providers and have connected with two three others - one local and two located in other areas - Ft. Wayne and one in Illinois. I'll keep working this until I hopefully get someone who can give us a price. So, stay tuned!

Hi folks -

Well, I'm afraid I have some crappy news. I emailed my contact at a service provider to request final pricing for us, and this was his reply to my inquiry about pricing:

"I (just) left you another VM - just letting you know that the material's price is too unstable and is extremely high for residential application this year. I have no control over the base price, so I'm going to have to wait this out for a while. I'm not able to foresee pricing beyond a few weeks right now, which increases the challenge and risk. It's generally linked to fuel markets, which have been very volatile for the last several weeks and continue to rise.

I'll check back if prices drop significantly and stabilize in the near future, and we can reevaluate if you like - thanks again."

Then I called another service provider and they quoted me $6/linear foot. For someone who needs 300 ft of gravel treated, that's comes to $1800, which is rather insane. They're aware of the county program that was abandoned and know the price is high, perhaps too high for most residents. I told them I have 17 prospective residents and almost 7500 linear feet of business that I could give them, and then asked if they would provide a discount. They said they would talk with the powers-that-be and see if something can be worked out, and will call me back. So, I'll stay on top of this and try calling them back on Friday, May 1st.

I'm really sorry about this - I feel like I've let everyone down, but the best I can do is keep searching and/or hope that the fuel prices that are impacting the material price will come down and come down soon, so that we can move forward on this. I'll keep trying -

If you decide to go off and do your own thing, I get it.

Hi folks - it’s NOT too late to sign up for dust control. A couple of reminders:

1. The first post on this page explains what the product is. So please scroll down to review that post and decide if you’re comfortable with the product.

2. About two posts ago I asked interested residents to post the name of their road and the length of road coverage they want in linear feet. PLEASE go to that post and post your information - not your entire address - just the name of your road and feet desired.

3. You will need to apply for a $20 permit with the MoCo Hwy Dept. They can be reached at 765-362-2304. I’m guessing that you’ll likely need to inform them of the product being used. Use the photos in one of my posts below which has product information.

4. I will firm up the number of residents and cumulative linear feet with the vendor on April 30th - so in two weeks. So keep encouraging our gravel road community of residents to visit this page if they’re interested in receiving dust control.

5. Once the business gives me a price, I will share it on this page and then supply you with a code to use with the vendor for your discounted rate and you’ll contact them directly to arrange for your dust control application.

Thanks for hanging in there, folks - we’re getting close 👍🏻

I communicated with the dust control service provider today and he’s definitely going to offer a volume discount based on 13 residents and approx 4700 cumulative linear feet. But he says it’s still too early to offer specific pricing - I think because the material pricing varies day to day. He said he’d know something by May 1st. So, we’re going to keep inviting folks to post their road name and amount of road needing treated. Please share this with others. Thank you!

Ok, so - here’s what I’m proposing. I need to convey to the dust control service provider how many customers we can offer him and total linear feet. So please share your road information like I have in the following comment I made for my self. I’ll leave it open until March 31st. Then I plan to give him the total aggregate footage and road names to see if there would be a discounted price for those who sign up through him.

Okay folks, so, I've got a company lined up and now, I need to start feeding them customers. Here's how I'd like to do this. They anticipate charging $2.25 linear foot for 12' wide roads, and $2.50 linear foot for 16' wide roads. Pricing is not yet entirely firm, but this is what he's predicting based upon the current costs of available product to be applied. He'll have it firmed up in about another month.

Second, the material he's using an extract of Soybean oil - I'm going to try to get a pdf posted in another post of more specifications of the product used.

Please start driving your friends who live on gravel roads to this sight for more information forthcoming! In my next post, I’m going to start asking for your last name, road name (not address) , and number of feet you want treated. That’s where I’ll keep a running list to tally up.

So, here's a small update. I've found a list of about 3-5 companies who could service our MoCo gravel roads. I'm planning to send an email out shortly, asking them for pricing information. Here's the text of my email:

Hello [Company Name / Contact Name],

I am reaching out to request pricing and information regarding gravel road dust control services in Montgomery County, Indiana.

The Montgomery County Highway Department has suspended its 50/50 dust control cost-share program. As a result, I am exploring private options not only for my road, but potentially on behalf of dozens of residents who live on Montgomery County gravel roads and are actively seeking alternatives for the upcoming season.

If I am able to gather sufficient participation, this could become a multi-road or multi-mile project. Accordingly, I am very interested in understanding whether you offer volume pricing or discounts for coordinated applications serving multiple residents or road segments within the same geographic area.

Initial project details (for budgeting purposes):

• Location: Montgomery County, Indiana (west-central Indiana)
• Road Type: Gravel / crushed limestone (typical county gravel roads)
• Estimated Length: [Insert approximate length or “TBD – multiple segments possible”]
• Width: Approximately [X] feet
• Traffic Level: Light to moderate residential and farm traffic
• Desired Timing: [Month / Spring–Summer 2026 season]

For budgeting and comparison purposes, could you please provide:

• Recommended dust control product(s)
• Application rate
• Expected longevity under typical Montgomery County conditions
• Surface preparation requirements
• Whether grading is recommended prior to application
• Whether crown adjustment is advised to improve performance and drainage
• Whether mid-season reapplication is typically required
• Total cost per linear foot or per mile
• Minimum order requirements
• Volume discount thresholds (if multiple roads participate)
• Scheduling availability
• Insurance documentation (if applicable)

Because local road bases in this area are typically limestone, I would also appreciate any insight into best practices for maximizing product longevity under these soil conditions.

If helpful, I would be glad to discuss estimated total mileage once I have gauged resident participation. I am attempting to assemble enough interested property owners to make this logistically efficient and financially attractive for all parties.

Please let me know if a site visit is required to prepare a more accurate quote.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

So, because some are understandably reluctant to post their home address on this page (or any page), I’m going to suggest that you send me an email to my personal email account that should look like this:

Subject: Dust Control
Length: 100yds
Address: 123 400 W, Cville 47933
Phone: 765-123-4567

Please send your email to my address at [email protected]

I’ll keep an eye out for your email messages and will save them in a file in my gmail account. Please encourage your gravel road neighbors to join this page… the more we can get on board, I hope/think we’ll get better pricing than we would if we each went at a service provider, individually.
