🌸 Hot take: dahlias are not bulbs 😬 Let's talk a little dahlia lingo....

If you’ve been calling them bulbs… you’re not alone—but here’s the deal 👀

Dahlias grow from tubers, and that changes how they grow (and why they sometimes fail).

👉 Bulbs (tulips, allium, daffodils):
• Round + layered (like an onion 🧅)
• Contain a full baby plant inside
• Grow roots from a flat base
• Very predictable growers

Dahlia tubers:
• Look like little potatoes 🥔
• Solid inside (no layers)
• No built-in plant
• Only grow if there’s an “eye”
• Grow in clumps from a crown

💡 The key mistake:
No eye = no plant 😬

💡 Why this matters:
Treating a tuber like a bulb = weak growth, rot, or no blooms

Almost done planting dahlias. Up before the sun, captured this cotton candy, sherbet sky over the flower shed. Quiet, calm, no wind, just joy with Robins and Finches chirping. My morning tea quote said it all💕 Happy Tuesday.

Here's my review of growing this beast 😂. Is it a go in your garden or hard pass?
My takeaways.
1. Swearing will be abundant.
2. Not pet and kid...nor any living being friendly.
3. U got all the thorns off?...think again.😂 Refer to number 4.

Hail, cold, heat, thunderstorm—Mother Nature’s got her weather roulette spinning! What wild card will she deal us today? 😂 (more cold and rain rest of week I believe) On the “heat” day, my wheelbarrow was living its best life, hauling compost (smiling) and getting pumped for planting season!

Heads up, tuber customers: shipping continues next week (weather and destination temps willing)! If you’re on the pick-up list or awaiting an individual email response from me, I’ll be reaching out soon!

Did you know there are dahlias that are teeny tiny? Blooms are only up to 2" in diameter.
Meet Minion and Micro cultivars that have loads of blooms for pollinators, great for balconies and patios too...as they are shorter plants

I recommend giving them room to thrive in a pot. No less than 12" pot that's 12 -15" deep. But you don't have to start there. As the plant grows just transplant to bigger pot. At least 6 hours of sun needed. My dahlias are full sun, no trees in sight and they thrive.
They also make great show dahlias. Easy to transport to a show. I have won some awards with Kelsey Tinker. Some blues woth both Elvia and Lo Boom Boom. Kelsey Radiance is also a sweet Micro collarette.
