I grow gladeoulus because my mammaw grew them.
I typically dont pick them, just enjoy them...
However, when the dober missile is active, he tends to banshee his way breaking everything in his path...
Soooooo, enjoy this bouquet, "picked" by Jake.
Also coreopsis and zinnias are starting to shine.

Busy day ahead of much needed rain tonight. Did some apple grafting since I found 4 m7 wayyyy too big rootstocks. Some good varieties that do well here including Mississippi Smith, Joy, and a rare LSU type. Thanks to Randall K White at famous YouTube channel. https://youtube.com/?si=EWNly19MbFuSZFVO

Also got to visit with David The Good at Atmore Farm & Garden. Can't help but spend a few dollars and support local businesses! Especially those with actual experts to help. I got 2 nice Anna Apple to replace 1 I lost to giant grubs. That wasn't on my orchard bingo card.

The rest is just stuff thats happening here.
Sure is nice to look out and love what you see.

This year, rains are right on time!

If you have woods nearby, take a stroll the next week or so, and dont forget your basket and scissors...youll wanna cut them off at ground if possible to avoid disturbing the mycelium on the forest floor.
Easy to ID. Taste delicious.

And so it begins! Corn is trying to tassel, beans are shooting up, and now that it's warm, so is okra.
Not too late to plant hot weather crops.

Just watch out for our friends. They are handy to have around! As long as your dog doesnt wanna play with em...

Jake inspecting the tiawanica lemon rootstocks.
These are extraordinarily hardy plants that make great "ade" type drinks (lemonade) and marmalade...but they do retain some floral notes from their orange lineage.
If you're looking for a set and forget type of lemon that is a great producer, tiawanica is a great option.
Be warned the tree is thorny and fruits can be seedy...oh, and its not technically a lemon...more of a sour orange with lemon bitterness.
But its a GREAT and rare option down here.

Someone asked me why thier new persimmon wasn't blooming.
Well, it likely is or will be shortly.
Oriental types like fuyu have a sneaky bloom that matches the leaf color....
See image for one of mine I took today.

And somehow, the pollinators find em every year.

I love having a few non astringent persimmons...you can eat em when they're crunchy or when they get soft and both ways are delicious as long as they are fully orange.

I don't advise doing same experiment with American persimmons..at least the crunchy part. You'll discover a vivid definition of the word Astrigent for the rest of your life. 😆

Very few things are as handy as 5 gallon buckets around the orchard.
I use em for biochar, making Potting mix, moving compost, toting fertilizer, water, etc...
And while free buckets are great, this deal at Costco is worth mentioning!

3 buckets for under 5 bucks! I think sale runs thru mid May.
I paid 4.99 for 3.
I may or may not have purchased 9.
Im thinking of building a fort...😄

A random Thursday update. Beautiful time of year with lots of blooms.

A random tip to go along with post? If you want your banana trees to produce fruit and grow faster...cut all but 4 top leaves. When a new one unfurls, cut off bottom one.
Also, you cant overfeed or overwater a banana.
Once it produces bananas, you should cut it to ground and let one of the pups take over.

The right tools make ALL the difference. Thanks to David The Good at Atmore Farm & Garden for carrying REAL tools.
Sorry for dust and shakeyness... I was filming one handed in the corn before the rain tonight!!

Peach and stone fruit help...

This, friends, is peach leaf curl, A fungus that is annoying and can really stress peach trees (submitted by client, whose camera needs a little cleaning).

It's fairly easily treated with copper sprays. Just be sure you peach tree blossoms are done so the pollinators dont have a bad day...

The other one to watch for is shot hole, just exactly like what it sounds, with leaves peppered by small holes.

Same treatment.

As for insects, just watch trunk and leaves. Aphids, grasshoppers, beetles, and other opportunistic pests are gonna start ramping up.
Sevin is a decent all purpose option as are some horticultural oils.

Oh, and as much as it may bother you, thin fruit now when they are around quarter sized. Easy way to remember is at least a fist width between fruit....unless you have barbie sized tiny hands, then grab a ruler and go for 3.5 to 4 inches.

A little attention now ensures a delicious peach ice cream in the middle of summer.
