Should I close the vents in rooms nobody uses?

It feels like a money saver, but it usually works against you.

Here's what most people don't realize. Your HVAC system is sized and balanced for your whole house, not room by room. The blower pushes a set amount of air no matter what, so when you close a vent, that air doesn't just disappear. It has to go somewhere.

What it does is build pressure inside your ductwork. That extra pressure forces cooled air out through every little leak in the system, and plenty of those leaks sit up in your hot attic. So the air you paid to cool gets dumped where you'll never feel it.

It gets worse from there. The added strain wears on your blower motor, and the choked airflow across the coil can freeze it into a solid block of ice. Now you've traded a little savings for a repair.

Closed off rooms bring their own trouble too. With no air moving through them, they trap our Georgia humidity and start to smell musty or grow mold.

So leave the vents open, or crack them at most. If one room runs way too hot or cold no matter what, that's a real airflow issue worth solving the right way, not a vent to slam shut.

My bedrooms are too hot to sleep in at night even with the AC running. What can I do?

Frustrating, especially when the living room feels perfect and the bedroom feels like August.

Here is what usually causes it.

My breaker keeps tripping every afternoon when the AC kicks on. Why?

The timing is the tell. Afternoon is the hottest stretch of the day, so your compressor pulls the most power right when it trips. That points to a system straining harder than it should.

A few causes we run into around Gainesville.

A weak capacitor. That's the part that gives your compressor the jolt to start. When it fades, the motor drags, pulls extra amps, and pops the breaker.

A dirty outdoor coil. When pollen and debris smother the unit, it runs hot and works overtime, and all that heat drives the amp draw up.

Low refrigerant. The compressor runs longer and hotter trying to keep up, and eventually the breaker says enough.

The furnace sits square and level in the basement, with insulated flex ducts branching off the plenum to carry conditioned air to every room in the house.
