Welcome to the Chelsea Chop, Georgia style. It’s not pretty or for the faint of heart, but a late season haircut on your spent perennials will allow a second flush. It also gives the thriving material like the Rose Mallow, Elephant Ears, Yarrow and Ark Angel to shine.

I was privileged to design and oversee a project for a centuries old method from Europe called Hugelkultur for a client. This involves using large felled tree cut up and set in rows and then terracing. By placing a jute netting of hay and decaying material over the logs, it encourages the logs to decay into the earth. The terraced areas will be used to plant pollinators. It is an awesome concept. Love incorporating age old methods into the modern landscape.

Seasonal tips from The Green Man.
Now is a good time to start making plans for bringing your tender or tropical plants inside. If y”all remember, last year in Georgia, we were in the middle of a 30 day heat wave with temps hovering at 95. This fall is proving to be a little different so being ahead of the game is the order of the day.
Also make a plan for cutting back your perennials and marking what you have. Be sure to apply a nice layer of mulch on the root bales for extra protection through the winter. It is a good idea to mark your perennials so you remember what you have. Tongue depressors or wooden popsicle sticks make good cheap plant markers. If you want to be more professional, there are a myriad of styles on Amazon or nursery and garden suppliers.
Fall is a busy time and there is always something to do in the garden.
