🦋🌼 POLLINATOR OF THE WEEK 🌼🦋

Meet the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus)! 💛

With its bright yellow wings and bold black “tiger” stripes, this beautiful butterfly is one of Kentucky’s largest and most recognizable native butterflies.

🌿 A few fun facts:

🦋 Eastern Tiger Swallowtails can have a wingspan of around 3–5 inches!

🌸 Adults visit many different flowers for nectar, picking up and transferring pollen along the way.

🌳 Their caterpillars feed on several native trees, including tulip poplar, wild cherry, and magnolia.

💜 Not every Eastern Tiger Swallowtail is yellow! Some females have a beautiful dark form that can look almost completely black.

🌱 Supporting butterflies means more than planting flowers. Native trees and shrubs provide important food and habitat for their caterpillars, too!

🐝 Native Pollinator of the Week 🐝

Meet one of Kentucky’s most important native pollinators—the Common Eastern Bumble Bee (Bombus impatiens)!

These fuzzy little workers are essential to healthy ecosystems. As they visit flower after flower collecting nectar and pollen, they help native plants reproduce and support the wildlife that depends on them.

One of the coolest things about the Common Eastern Bumble Bee is that it can buzz pollinate! By vibrating certain flowers, it shakes loose pollen that many other bees can’t reach. This makes them especially important for plants like tomatoes, peppers, blueberries, and many of Kentucky’s beautiful native wildflowers.
