It’s hard to believe on this beautiful day that dangerous weather is only hours away! Please remember these important tips to protect your home, self and community in the coming days:
*Outdoor spigots and pipes should be in the OFF position and insulated using styrofoam, blankets, or any other source of warmth. The outermost layer should be waterproof, if possible. (Think tarps, garbage bags, etc)
*Indoor pipes on EXTERIOR walls can also be insulated for extra protection.
*Cabinet doors throughout the home which contain pipes should be left OPEN to allow heat to circulate.
*Indoor faucets throughout the home, but especially those which are on exterior walls, should be left to drip or trickle lukewarm water. (Pro-tip: catch this water using whatever you have available and save for flushing, pets, etc in the event that water supply is lost.)
*If you notice water by way of flooding, wet walls or ceilings, or anyplace else it shouldn’t be, you should immediately cut the water supply to the house and contact your insurance company.
*Absolutely, the most important thing - take care of yourself and one another. Bring pets inside, check if elderly neighbors need help to prepare or stay warm. Don’t be afraid to ask if you need help or offer to share if you have extra. Remember, this is only for a little while. Prepare, but leave some for your community as well. After all, we’re all just walking each other home.
