I showed yall the differences between canning dry beans vs. soaked vs. cooked, but here’s how you’re actually going to can them!

Cheaper than store bought and you know exactly how they were processed. šŸ˜‰

Your rebel water bath time (meaning not usda approved!) is 3 hours. Don’t come at me - I just give the people what they ask for.

ā€œMy lids didn’t seal, what happened?!ā€

There are a few reasons why your lids don’t seal after processing, so here’s what to look for:

1. HEADSPACE & SIPHONING. Did you allow enough headspace? For meals in a jar or thick food, you need to allow room for it to expand. That’s usually why you’ll see a 1ā€ headspace rule. Sometimes if the mixture is very thick, I’ll even leave 1.5ā€ of headspace.

Jar contents that are all liquid (like broth) also have a higher risk of siphoning just from being brought up and down from temperature. Drastic temperature changes can cause siphoning.

When a jar siphons, the food gets between the lid and the rim of the jar and may prevent the lid from sealing, or could create a false seal.

2. RIM RESIDUE. Whenever I can something sticky or greasy, I wipe my rims with vinegar. This helps clean the edge of the rims, allowing my lids to get a strong seal.

3. YOUR LIDS. This is the #1 reason I advise everyone to use quality lids. There are a handful of brands out there and I exclusively use ForJars lids. I would not recommend using the off brand generic lids - you’ll usually find these on jars already from the store, dollar tree lids, etc.

I do understand budget constraints, so if that’s all you can use, it’s better than nothing! But just know, if your seal rate is low or your lids are popping off after just a few weeks or months - it might be your lids.

It is very frustrating to spend all that time preserving just to lose the food to a lid.

If you’re interested in checking out ForJars, you can use my discount code āļø ASHLIE10 āļø (without the stars šŸ˜‰) for savings on their website.

What other reasons would a lid not seal that I haven’t listed here?

Well, I didn’t start my own seeds early enough, so I picked up these tomato starts from our local nursery over the weekend! I also did research before planting this time šŸ™ˆšŸ˜‚

Did you know some tomato plants continue to grow up and others stay bushy?! I did not for my summer garden, but I know for fall!

Hoping for a better harvest this go around!

Do you think these are big enough to plant outside? I picked them up at our local nursery yesterday.

They’re tomatoes - homestead variety. I’m in zone 9 so it’s very very hot here still 🄵

A week ago I found mold on my tomato starts and I assumed they were all goners. Today I decided to pot them up and see if I can revive them!

Between all my starts (mostly tomatoes and peppers) I’ve got just over 100! 🤯 I definitely did not realize starting from seed could be so challenging.

I have them under grow lights and I’m putting up some fans today. Any other advice welcome šŸ¤šŸ¤

So many of you loved my bean comparison video, so now I’m wondering what else I should compare? šŸ¤”

Here’s what I’ve got so far:
1. Dry pack vs water for carrots
2. Open kettle vs water bath for pickles
3. Raw pack vs cooked meat

Are you interested in those?! What other things should I compare?

If you want the info to my long form videos, just comment TUBE and I’ll dm you the link šŸ¤

Revamping the quail enclosure to hopefully prevent future issues with bumblefoot!

There are pretty much two types of enclosures you’ll see for quail - aviary style that’s on the ground with a high ceiling (6’+) or the cages with a shorter ceiling. This is to prevent neck injuries when they fly up.

Many people use hardwire cloth for the shorter enclosures since the quail p**p A LOT and it makes clean up easier. So hopefully these new mats will prevent bumblefoot while still allowing for easy cleanup.
