Don't Do This! Part II
Hacking a tree like this means the new growth of the whole tree will be both young and vulnerable. Repeating this practice every year or so is even worse.
Aside from being aesthetically ugly, more importantly it is harmful to the tree.

Notice the mulch is piled against the trunk of this tree. The mulch is about 4 inches high on the trunk. This is terribly bad for the tree. The "Root Flair" should always be visible. The Root Flair is the area at the bottom of the trunk where the roots begin to spread out. Do not cover this area up!
Mulch or dirt high over the flare will cause negative issues with the tree. You do not want the trunk to stay wet and begin to decay.
This is a very common mistake that I see way too often.
