WINDOW CLEANING HORROR STORY IN DAYTON, OHIO
(Centerville, Ohio – May 10, 2024)
Like many budget conscious homeowners in the Dayton area, your neighbor Tom was looking to freshen up his home with some professional window cleaning. After making a few calls, he was thrilled to find a local company offering to clean every window in his two story home inside and out for just $160.00!
What a deal! With 32 windows in total, Tom was getting 64 panes and all the screens cleaned for only $2.50 per window. Feeling confident in his bargain-hunting skills, he booked the job for the following Tuesday. The company? For privacy reasons, we’ll call them Residential Pro Window and Gutter Cleaning.
Unfortunately on Tuesday, things got ugly.
The crew showed up at 8:30 AM as promised. But one of the workers, a young, inexperienced, and untrained in basic ladder safety, placed a ladder on uneven ground. Just 14 seconds later, the unattended ladder toppled over, crashing into Tom’s driveway and right onto his 2-year old Lexus. Total damages? $4336.00.
Hearing the commotion, Tom ran outside in a panic. As he confronted the crew, seconds later, another untrained worker lost his footing on a ladder and fell seven feet, fracturing his leg on Tom’s front porch. An ambulance arrived 20 minutes later.
It was a nightmare. But it was about to get worse. A lot worse.
Tom soon learned the ugly truth: Residential Pro didn’t carry commercial liability insurance. They had skipped it to keep their prices low. That meant they had no ability to cover the damage to Tom’s car. The company owner told Tom he could try to sue, but since the business operated under the table with no assets on the books, it would be like trying to get blood from a stone.
And then came the real gut punch.
Three days later, a representative from the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation knocked on Tom’s door. Because the company wasn’t insured through the Bureau, Tom, the homeowner, was now legally responsible for the injured worker’s medical bills. Over $22,000. And because the worker turned out to be undocumented, Tom’s legal troubles snowballed further.
All told, Tom’s “affordable” $160 window cleaning ended up costing him $28,500.00 not to mention six months of stress, sleepless nights, and legal headaches.
Here’s the good news: This never actually happened.
Here’s the bad news: It absolutely could. And it could happen to YOU.
If you hire an uninsured or under-the-table window or gutter cleaning company, this could happen to you.
If a company you hire to work on your property doesnt carry Workers’ Compensation coverage, this could happen to you.
If you hire undocumented workers, this could happen to you.
Protect yourself.
