I typically share budgets pretty evenly between annuals and perennials. While annuals give you more pop, pizzaz, and color; perennials are the gift that keeps on giving.

We replaced some aging lavender, added some tall phlox to compliment the existing phlox, some ferns (not pictured here, yes shame on me) andbsome funky petunias!

Let's talk about one of my favorite natives!

Blue Violet is one of those plants that is commonly considered a w**d. Self seeding and aggressive, they are hard to completely eliminate, and they like to show up in disturbed or uncovered soil.

Violets have cleistogamous flowers which are sealed, self fertilizing flowers that produce viable seeds hidden underground. That's part of what makes them so prolific.

Flowering from March to May, the violet is an excellent food source for multiple species of butterfly and pollinator, especially the Fritillary caterpillar.

They're edible for humans too, with a mild, inoffensive taste that works well as an add on to a salad or substitute for greens.

Most of the time, you can get Blue Violets by doing a whole lot of nothing, they're one of the most common volunteers I see in the Miami valley.

Sometimes, gardens can be filled not with expensive purchased plants, but by letting the garden do its own work.

Spring comes hand in hand with new beginnings.

I didnt post throughout all of last year, and that's left me with a backlog of projects to show off, and the season has truly begun with new gardens ready to be planted.

My kiddos built this little fairy house to celebrate spring.

So I thought I'd share with you, and maybe give out a little fairy cheer.

Here's to a lively and vibrant spring!

The coolest thing about native gardening is when your garden starts doing the work itself.

In the last week alone I've found new Shasta daisies, goldenrod, black eyed Susan's, and purple coneflower.

I've also found some black seed plantains and some rhomboid mercury along with my lovely dandelions and tomatillos.

In my past experience, even with the permaculture company, those were w**ds, through and through.

I only knew what a baby goldenrod was, in the context of removing it.

We have so much to unlearn on our professional journeys regarding plants and their identity on the "w**d or wanted" scale.

One of my favorite little forest garden reworks.

We cleaned this guy up and added some cypress bark mulch after moving some lovely hostas from another part of the yard on over.

Its always a good idea to work with what you've already got. Well established gardens grow themselves.
