Another project is nearing completion, and John gives us a look at the final stages of this backyard transformation.

For this project, we rebuilt the existing brick patio using the original materials, giving the space a fresh start while preserving the character of the original brick. We also added a new built-in grill to make the patio even more functional for outdoor entertaining.

One more project, almost ready to enjoy.

This brick patio makeover has completely changed the space—creating a timeless outdoor area built for everything from casual family dinners to summer entertaining.

We’re down to the final detail: waiting on the grill to be finished and installed. Then this backyard is officially ready to enjoy.

Look at the crack in the first photo.

That's not a hairline. You could get a finger in it — and it ran vertically through the brick, which tells you the wall wasn't cracking, it was moving.

Here's the part people miss: the crack was never the problem. Water had been collecting behind this wall for years with nowhere to drain. Every freeze, it expanded and pushed. The face finally opened up because something had to give.

So we fixed it from behind. Excavated along the section where the movement was worst, backfilled with clean gravel, put in drainage and cut weep holes so the water finally has an exit. Then we ground out every vertical crack, repointed them and the joints at the brick cap, washed it down, and reset the flagstone steps and landing while we were there.

Fill a crack like this and you'll be looking at it again next spring. Relieve the pressure and it stays closed.

Before → After.

This retaining wall was leaning forward and cracked through. Not a cosmetic problem — a structural one. And the cause wasn't the stone. It was water, trapped behind the wall for years with nowhere to go, pushing until the wall gave.

So we started behind it. Perforated drain pipe at the base, clean gravel backfill, filter fabric, weep holes cut in so the water actually has an exit. Then the wall came back up — stucco finish, bluestone cap, and the steps rebuilt with wider treads and an easier pitch so they're comfortable to walk.

The neighboring wall was still savable. We opened up two-thirds of it, added drainage, ground out every vertical crack and repointed it, cap joints included.

Same property. One wall rebuilt, one wall saved. Both of them draining properly for the first time.

We see this all the time this time of year.

Green in the joints means the sand has washed out and water is sitting where it shouldn't. One hard winter of freeze and thaw and that beautiful brick starts to shift, sink, and crack.

If your patio looks like these photos, let's get it on the schedule before the cold hits. Fixing it now costs a lot less than rebuilding it in the spring.

Every one of these bricks has a story — and they're all going back in the ground.

Salvaged brick is the quiet hero of a project like this. When we take up an old walkway, the sound brick gets cleaned, sorted, and reset into the new one. Same clay, same weathered color you can't buy new — just laid on a properly built base so it lasts another few decades.

It's slower than ordering a pallet. It's also why the finished walk looks like it's always belonged to the house.

Look closely: the bricks are fine. They're heaved, sunken, and pulling apart because of what's underneath — a base that was never dug deep enough or compacted properly. Water got in, froze, lifted, and settled. Now the joints are open and the weeds are moving in.

This is the walkway two winters after "we got a great price."

Do it once, do it right: proper excavation, compacted stone base, pitch for drainage, edges locked in. That's the difference between a walkway you enjoy and one you replace.

This is clean crushed stone going down before a single brick gets laid — screeded, compacted in lifts, pitched so water runs away from the house. It's the least photogenic day on the job and the one that decides everything.

A patio that sinks, shifts, or holds puddles almost never failed at the surface. It failed right here.

So when you're comparing contractors, ask a simple question: what's going under my patio, and how deep? The answer tells you a lot.
