Most people don’t understand this - but after having surgery on my arm , it feels downright odd not to have a chainsaw in my hand for six weeks! I’ve been putzing with the wood supply with my good arm for now. Used the little electric saw which is light, and felt it the next day - but happy to be moving in the right direction. We have rinks of oak, birch and aspen put up from the property.

Oak trees are among the most common species in this area - and oak wilt is one of the most common tree diseases you’ll see.

Trees are beginning to bud now, and soon we’ll begin to see leaves. It’s easier in spring and summer to tell which trees are diseased and dead or dying.

This is an example of an oak that has seen better days; it’ll be coming down shortly, and will be cleaned up/removed fast!

Trunk rot…

Phellinus tremulae was once considered as a part of the Phellinus igniarius complex, but is now recognized as a distinct species. It occurs exclusively on aspen, and is the most damaging decay fungus associated with the tree species. Decayed wood in fresh cut trees has a distinct wintergreen odour.

The decay can occur anywhere throughout the tree trunk. The result is weakened trees that snap off or blow down… especially in big summer storms, or when the ground becomes saturated from heavy rains. These trees also attract squirrels and woodpeckers - which are a good indicator of disease.

I’m on a project where more than a half dozen of these are leaning heavily toward buildings and parking areas. I’m taking them down old school - felling them with chainsaw, wedges, truck, winch or come-along. And taking great care to save the little oaks and maples that are coming up.

When I’m done - the home owner can rest easy knowing that one of these buggers isn’t going to come crashing down on her garage, or vehicle.

It is just a matter of time till they fall on their own. Why wait when you can take control?

Winter of 2025/26 is coming to an end - leaving in its wake some messes - leaners, and others that toppled from big winds and heavy snows.

The recent warm spell and melting snow has made it easier to get into yards, woods, and acreage to clean up anything from the eyesore to the downright dangerous.

Before and after pictures of a “view project” - in this case, the view of the lake.

This homeowner prefers to leave most of the acreage and all of the lakeshore for wildlife, but she did want to open up the hillside for a better view of the water from the perspective of the living room, deck, and fire pit.

I went in carefully with a brush cutter, and sometimes loppers - because it was very tall and thick. It was about 95% dogwood and hazel - but I wanted to save all the baby maple, oak and birch.

As you can see - it made quite a difference.

I’m still finishing up piling some of the brush for chipping and mulch, and also cleaning up a couple of downed oak for firewood - but it’s close to completion.

Do you have dead, dying or diseased trees on your lot, lakeshore, or acreage?

Since i am in the tree biz, I can’t help but constantly notice them when I’m driving my truck, or out on the lakes fishing from my boat.

Fall is upon us. Ash, birch and basswood are changing fast - as are some individual maple that may be stressed.

Dead and diseased trees stick out like a sore thumb, but only for a bit longer. By around October 20 - all the trees will be barren, and the dead ones will blend in.

All to say that - now is a good time to get some flagging tape, and check your lots and acreage for problem trees.

Once the snow flies, the ground freezes, and the lakes are covered with ice … that’s when I can come by and fell/remove dead trees with very minimal impact. Often, I can drop them on the lake ice, and work from there. So - no holes, divets, tracks or ruts to speak of on your property.

Numerous big storms have blown through our area this summer. Trees become much heavier with all that rain water logging them. Add rain saturated soil and weakened root systems, and when the wind comes up - down they go.

If you have storm damage from this summer - give me a chance to assess and estimate, and you just might be pleasantly surprised.

Another “view project.”

In this case - a buckthorn takeover around the perimeter of the yard, in the gardens, all around the house, and along the lakeshore too. The amount of buckthorn i removed was astonishing.

Basswood and Ash sprouts are also quick to take over, as well as drooping branches from mature trees.

Overall - it slowly takes away the view until you can barely see the lake.

This homeowner prefers a selective approach: keep the mature trees trimmed, allow for some new growth, remove unwanted species, leave the majority of the lakeshore for wildlife- but have a small beach/swimming area for the kids and grandkids to enjoy.

I don’t do regular lawn and landscaping service as I don’t have time for returning weekly - but sometimes I do “ project makeovers” like this one. I topped this one off with a fresh cut and trim - and now this property is ready for an upcoming family reunion, for all to enjoy.

Sometimes - my work is “all about the view.”

Most lake home owners want to see the water - but as is the case with this property, understory species like Hazel, Dogwood or aspen can quickly obstruct the view - and who wants to be missing out on that?

I’m working on selectively removing those species while keeping desirables like maple, oak and ash. “After photos” to follow.
