Historic Berkeley Regis

Historic Berkeley Regis Appreciating and advocating for the history, architecture, and people of Berkeley Regis neighborhood.

Berkeley Regis is located within a larger area inhabited by indigenous peoples for over ten thousand years. Here over millenniums, older generations passed on their histories, cultures, and traditions to succeeding ones. In more recent historic times this was the traditional ancestral territory for Native American groups of the Plains that included the Arapaho, Cheyenne, Apache, Kiowa, Comanche, and Utes, and others after the arrival of the horse.

Special Event this Wednesday, April 29th, doors open at 6:30 and program begins at 7:00. Berkeley Park Chapel, 46th Ave. and Tennyson

You won't want to miss this deeply researched presentation by authors Mark Barnhouse and Jim Cavoto, Sr. on Denver-area cemeteries. Join us at the Berkeley Park Chapel, itself fittingly a former mortuary now revitalized. The speakers will share historical stories and observations especially relevant to residents of Northwest Denver. Copies of their book will be for sale and autographing.

Cemeteries are not only places to host funerals and house bodies in their eternal rest, but also document the history of the communities and their inhabitants. They serve as open-air museums displaying some fine works of art in their grave markers and monuments. Burial grounds offer locations for public and private mourning and are meeting grounds where people gather for commemorative activities and community events. They also serve as parks, with inspiring vistas and serene settings for quiet contemplation. Cemeteries are often associated with business ventures, as well.

We look forward to seeing you for this important presentation!

56 years ago on April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was organized as a national "teach-in" to protest environmental destruction and bring awareness to ecological issues. The student anti-war movement and a 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill resulted in the form and urgency of the event, which mobilized 20 million Americans and resulted in the creation of the Environmental Protection Administration, as well as landmark environmental legislation.

They are blooming again! Photo taken today--

Here's the history we shared last year about the yellow roses blooming in the spring throughout Berkeley Regis.

Harison's roses came across the plains to Colorado and can be seen blooming in homesteads and historic gardens. Photo below is one of the beautiful examples in Berkeley Regis neighborhood. Information below is from High Country Roses website:

"There’s no need for a calendar when you have a Harison’s Yellow in your garden. Bright and cheerful trusses of deep yellow blooms emerge from the grey of late winter to declare the coming of spring. Canes arch and reach 5 to 6 feet with ferny foliage and an upright habit, the shrub will produce suckers and form a brier clump if allowed.

This rose has truly reached legendary status. From it’s haphazard origins in Harison’s New York City garden, to its well chronicled journeys west with the Forty-Niners, Harison’s Yellow is truly an American icon. It is still found on old homesteads along the Oregon Trail, surviving with little water and care. Harison’s has numerous aliases including the incorrect spelling “Harrison’s Yellow”, rosa harisonii, the Oregon Trail Rose, Hogg’s Yellow, Yellow Sweet Brier and the Yellow Rose of Texas."

Historic Berkeley Regis is celebrating our 10th anniversary!

Our group began in 2016 when two longtime Berkeley Regis residents became worried about the demolition of historic buildings in the neighborhood. They helped organize an effort to encourage retention of a two-story Foursquare-style house associated with the 1914 Steele Gymnasium at 3914 King Street. Both buildings are still standing and reinvigorated as the Goddard School of Denver-Highlands today. We'll continue to save our history and celebrate with special events during this special year.
