FIVE STEPS TO ZEN
So… we all have our hang ups when it comes to clutter and taking care of ourselves and our surroundings. I have listed my top five favorite steps to Zen that help keep me sane during even the most stressful weeks. (And then of course, when these fail, I ask my boss for a gift certificate to my favorite restaurant and/or masseuse/masseur!!)
1. Make your bed every morning! This starts your day with a sense of accomplishment and ends your day with a fresh beginning for a good night’s sleep.
2. Eat Well to stay Focused! Keep your frig full of fresh cheeses, veggies, yogurt, chilled water and your pantry filled with healthy crackers, nuts, fruits and snacks. If you are on the go, have snack items and water handy in your car or your desk drawer. This will save you from binging on fast food or unhealthy snacks like chips or candy.
3. Open you Mail Every Day! Throw away all junk mail immediately, and sort the other items in priority. Try a three tier rack in your home office or at your kitchen desk:
First: for important things or items that must be taken care of: Like bills, or notice to renew your license
Second: for important things that can wait: Like RSVP’s to events, coupons, etc.
Third: for leisure and fun stuff, like magazines, flyers and advertisements that interest you.
This also works for your inbox/outbox for your Gmail account!
4. Keep your Car clear of Clutter! Each time that you stop for gas, organize any items in your car and throw away all trash right there at the pump. I keep a traveling basket in my truck for items I use daily for my job, and reload or unload each night depending on the next day's assignment. Clean your windshield if you haven’t in a while to give you a fresh clean view of your journey.
5. Find your Happy Place! Do something small for yourself each week or maybe a co-worker, relative or friend that needs a special pick me up. Fresh flowers on your desk or home dining table, a newly scented candle, or a new colorful coffee mug. Meet your friends to try that new IPA or fresh local label of vino everyone is raving. You will begin to look forward to this at least once a week to catch up on all the new chatter!
