Backyard Flower Pot

Backyard Flower Pot Welcome to Backyard Flower Pot! Passionate about quality, sustainability, and beauty - thank you for supporting local!

I'm a small backyard grower of native plants, perennials, cut flowers, fresh fruits, veggies, herbs, and handmade natural products. I'm a retired professional turned homeschooling mama with a deep love for nature. My passion for gardening began in my teens, but I didn't start growing plants myself until my early 20's. After having my first child, I dove head first into growing herbs to create natu

ral soaps, teas, and cleaning products - a craft I've been perfecting for over 15 years. I now grow a wide variety of plants to create herbal tinctures, oil infusions, skincare products, cleaning products, and teas. I also enjoy experimenting with fermented foods, like water kefir, kombucha, and my favorite creation: pine needle soda! At home, we compost, recycle, and run a thriving worm farm to minimize waste. My gardens are herbicide and pesticide free, grown following organic practices, and enriched with homemade compost. I'm deeply passionate about native plants, habitat restoration, and connectioning people with sustainable living and locally grown plants, flowers, and produce. What started as a personal hobby has blossomed into a rewarding new career and small business. My mission is to help my community access native plants, fresh produce, and affordable options for their yards, gardens, and tables. Thank you for supporting small growers and local businesses!

With the gardening season heating up, Governor Maura Healey is set to proclaim May 29 “Growing Wild Day” in Massachusetts, coinciding with the launch of the sixth year of the Growing Wild Massachusetts initiative. Growing Wild Massachusetts encourages residents to plant native plants, whether in a flowerpot or a full garden, to protect biodiversity and strengthen our ecosystems.

To help spur action across the Commonwealth, free Growing Wild starter kits (which include 2 one-gallon native plants and a seed packet) will be available at 21 nurseries, including Mahoney's Garden Centers and Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Falmouth, starting May 29, and on select dates throughout June at DCR locations.

All residents are encouraged to Pledge Their Garden online – whether they planted native from a Growing Wild starter kit or on their own – to see the power of collective impact. Visit https://mnla.com/pollinator/growingwild/ for more info.

Local peeps…

I have a ton of Lactuca serriola coming up that I will need to cull out soon!

If you have ever been interested in growing this plant (which is used as a pain reliever in herbal preparations), now is your chance for some free plants.

I can show you where they are and you can take as few or as many as you’d like. I would bring some pots with soil to get them planted and watered while you are here because they will not hold up well bare root given how big they already are.

I have availability many days this week if you’d like to swing by for some lactuca plants.

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) – Tough, Versatile, and Loved by Pollinators
If you're looking for a durable, long-blooming native that brings both beauty and biodiversity to your garden, Yarrow is an excellent choice. Native to Massachusetts, Yarrow produces flat-topped clusters of tiny white (sometimes pinkish) flowers from early summer through fall. It thrives in full sun and dry to average soils, making it ideal for borders, meadows, and drought-prone areas.
🌱 Size & Growth Habit
Yarrow typically grows 1.5 to 3 feet tall and spreads 1 to 2 feet wide, forming dense clumps of finely divided, fern-like foliage. It spreads by rhizome and seed, making it great for naturalized plantings and erosion control.
🍃 Why Grow Yarrow?
✅ Pollinator-friendly – Attracts bees, butterflies, and beneficial predatory insects
✅ Drought-tolerant – Thrives in lean, dry soils with little care
✅ Deer and rabbit resistant – Aromatic foliage deters browsing
✅ Long bloom time – From June well into fall
✅ Easy to grow – Low-maintenance and reliable in tough conditions
🔹 Pairs Well With These Massachusetts Natives:
Lance-Leaf Coreopsis (Coreopsis lanceolata) – Similar size and sun needs, with bright yellow blooms
Butterfly W**d (Asclepias tuberosa) – Adds bold orange and supports monarchs
Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) – Native grass that adds movement and seasonal interest
Brown-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia triloba) – A classic pairing for long-lasting summer color
Yarrow is perfect for sunny borders, meadows, erosion control, and low-maintenance native plantings. With its long bloom season, pollinator value, and rugged nature, it’s a reliable workhorse for ecological gardening.
