One thing I’ve been reflecting on lately is how often we confuse the lowest price with the best value.
Whether it’s farming, land stewardship, photography, electrical work, catering, carpentry, or any skilled trade, you’re not simply paying for someone’s time. You’re investing in years of experience, knowledge, training, problem-solving, tools, and dedication to a craft.
I often hear people say they’ll hire a high school student or college kid instead. While young people can absolutely be hardworking and capable, their labor deserves to be valued too.
The expectation that someone should work for less simply because they’re young is part of a bigger issue. Labor has value. Effort has value. Time has value.
What concerns me most is the mindset that skilled work should be discounted simply because someone is willing to accept less. Too often, that creates a race to the bottom where nobody wins.
As small business owners, tradespeople, farmers, and service providers, we’re not charging for an hour of work. We’re charging for the years it took to learn how to do that hour of work well.
A beautiful garden, a successful event, a safe electrical system, or a meaningful piece of art doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because someone invested their life into learning their craft.
If we want strong communities, thriving small businesses, and future generations who value skilled trades, we must be willing to value the people doing the work.
Pay people fairly.
Respect skilled labor.
Support small businesses.
Value craftsmanship.
That’s how we build stronger communities.
