Tree Trivia Thursday: Nuttall Oak (Quercus texana)

The Nuttall Oak is a fast-growing, large deciduous tree native to the south-central United States, particularly the lower Mississippi River Valley, including Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, and western Tennessee. It thrives in USDA Hardiness Zones 6–9 and is known for its impressive size and vibrant red fall foliage. Mature trees typically reach heights of 40–60 feet, with a spread of 35–50 feet, growing at a rate of 2–4 feet per year.

A notable specimen holds the current world record and is located in the White River National Wildlife Refuge in Desha County, Arkansas. This champion tree boasts a trunk circumference of 274 inches, a height of 100 feet, and a crown spread of 102 feet.

The Nuttall Oak offers substantial ecological value, especially to wildlife. It produces a high volume of acorns that are retained late into the season, providing a crucial food source during the winter months. Its acorns are rich in protein—approximately 35%, which is higher than many other oak species. The tree’s adaptability to wet soils and its role in offering cover and nesting habitat make it essential for a variety of wildlife, including deer, squirrels, wild turkey, and waterfowl.

Tree Trivia Thursday: Chickasaw Plum (Prunus angustifolia)

The Chickasaw Plum, scientifically known as Prunus angustifolia, is a small deciduous tree that typically grows between 14 to 25 feet tall and up to 20 feet wide. Native to the southeastern United States, this tree is highly valued for its ecological benefits and ornamental appeal.

Chickasaw Plums produce fruit that attracts a wide range of wildlife, including quail, deer, turkey, and even humans. The tree’s dense thickets also provide excellent thermal cover for quail and other small mammals, offering essential shade during the summer months.

Its fragrant white flowers bloom in early spring and serve as an important nectar source for pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Chickasaw Plums are hardy in USDA zones 5 through 9 and typically begin to bear fruit within 2 to 3 years, with ripening occurring around June.

Tree Triva Thursday The American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) has a typical lifespan of 50 to 75 years and can reach heights of 69 to 79 feet under optimal conditions. Some specimens have been reported to live up to 150 years. The tree usually begins to bear fruit between 4 and 9 years after planting. Once established, it requires minimal fertilizer and water.

American persimmons are dioecious, meaning individual trees are either male or female. Both male and female trees are necessary for fruit production, with only the female trees bearing fruit. This species holds significant ecological value, providing food and habitat for a variety of wildlife. It serves as a host tree for the luna moth and several other moth caterpillars.

Fruit is typically dropped in the late season, from September to December. Many animals, including white-tailed deer, raccoons, and foxes, feed on persimmon fruit.
