Ah this is why we had so many fireflies in our yard. We leave the leaves until after the frosts and rains.

Hello. I'm a Firefly larva. I look like a tiny, flat alligator. You find me in the damp mulch in May.
The Secret:
I am a specialized slug and snail hunter. I inject them with a paralyzing chemical and eat them. If you want fireflies in June, you need me in May!
What to do:

Leave the Leaves: I need leaf litter to survive.

No Chemicals: Pesticides kill me first.

Ah so this is what she is called and she loves the wildflowers in my yard! She is one reason I have organic gardens and yard. My yard is not just green grass. It is lush green grass, fine soft grass, wildflowers, lots of trees, and more.

22,450 acres. Bigger than Manhattan. Now dedicated to wild horses who were once at risk of being chased, captured, and forgotten.

A massive piece of land in Colorado is being turned into a lifelong safe haven for rescued mustangs. Wide open space. Natural water. Rolling hills. Room to run again.

For years, wild horses across the American West have faced helicopter roundups and removal from public lands. Supporters of the roundups say the herds have grown too large and the land cannot support them. But animal advocates have long argued that these horses suffer extreme stress, injuries, and trauma during the process.

Many Americans grew up seeing wild horses as symbols of freedom. Seeing them crowded into holding facilities instead of roaming free has left a lot of people heartbroken.

That is why this new refuge matters so much.

Instead of spending the rest of their lives behind fences in government holding pens, hundreds of mustangs will now have the chance to live in a more natural environment. To graze. To run. To stay with their herds.

What makes this even more powerful is that the land was once used for cattle operations. Now it is being used to protect animals instead.

In a world where wildlife keeps losing space, this feels rare. A reminder that people can still choose compassion over control.

For these horses, freedom may never look exactly the same again. But this is still a second chance. And for many people watching this story unfold, it feels like a small piece of the wild is finally being protected instead of erased.
