🚨 Small business isn’t just about making money—it’s about integrity, community, and choosing to lift each other up. Here’s how other lawn care businesses saved ours from a really messy week.🚨
If you own a business in Enterprise, dream of starting one, or just want a good story to read, I hope you’ll take a minute to read this.
For those who don’t know us, we’re Josh and Elizabeth—a husband-and-wife team running our lawn care business. I (Elizabeth) handle the business side, and Josh manages the crew and equipment. He’s also a Coast Guard Reservist after 13 years of active duty. And in between running a business, we’re raising and homeschooling our seven kids. Our life is a beautiful mix of chaos and blessings, and we wouldn’t trade it for anything.
But recently, we were tested.
Josh took a 90-day assignment with the Coast Guard, which meant I was left running the business with out him. We hired someone new to replace Josh on the crew, and we expected the usual challenges that come with running a small business. What we didn’t expect was for another local lawn service to reach out to our crew leader, offer him a big payout, and take him from us without any notice.
I was crushed—not just because it hurt our business, but because it felt so personal. We’ve always tried to run this business with honesty and integrity, so seeing someone try to take advantage felt like a punch to the gut.
But here’s where everything changed.
As I struggled to keep up, feeling overwhelmed and on the edge of tears more than once, something beautiful happened. Other local lawn care businesses stepped in without a second thought. They offered their help, sent their crews, and they are getting it DONE. It was so much help that I couldn’t even use it all. What started as a nightmare turned into a reminder of everything that’s good in this community.
This experience reminded me again: There are two kinds of businesses.
One will take from others to get ahead, losing integrity in the process. The other will lift others up, even when they have nothing to gain. That’s the kind of business I want to run. That’s the kind of people I want to support. We paid for the help, but we actually paid less than the other business- we lost less money and integrity.
So, if you’re thinking of starting a lawn care business—or any business—please reach out to me. I’ll tell you everything I can to help you succeed. I’ll share what works, what doesn’t, how to price jobs, and how to build a business that you can be proud of. There’s always room for businesses that choose integrity. Competition happens at the bottom between selfish, low integrity people. Collaboration happens at the top. That’s the secret to true success. You will have higher value clients who treat you so well and peers ready to help you out.
And with all my heart, I want to thank these incredible businesses:
