The remodel transformed the existing kitchen, laundry room, and living area, focusing on creating a more open and functional layout. As with many renovations, the goal was to enhance circulation and maximize the use of space.

To achieve this, the kitchen was opened up to the adjacent sunken living room, creating a brighter, more inviting environment ideal for both everyday living and entertaining.

A new butler’s pantry was seamlessly integrated into an expanded hallway, leading to the remodeled laundry room for improved convenience and storage.

Additionally, a custom record storage room was designed to showcase and protect the owner’s extensive vinyl collection, blending display with functionality.

For the final touches, the owners selected finishes that balanced warmth and modernity—brightening the existing wood tones with a refined, Southern-inspired layout.

Nestled among towering redwoods, a thoughtfully designed accessory dwelling unit (ADU) was seamlessly integrated into a heavily wooded parcel. Site constraints, including underground utilities, presented challenges that shaped the layout, ultimately resulting in a one-story, one-bedroom retreat.

Echoing the architectural style and materials of the main residence, the ADU harmonizes with its surroundings. Inside, the flexible layout accommodates a variety of needs, serving as a guest house for visiting family, a home office, and a private retreat. Raised and vaulted ceilings enhance the sense of openness, creating a bright and airy living space within the forested setting.

The remodel aimed to enhance the home’s flow. It improved connections between the interior spaces and landscaped outdoor areas, while maximizing natural daylight.

The kitchen was opened up to the living room. It created a more inviting space for hosting guests and offering seamless views of both the ocean in the front and the garden in the backyard.

The small master bathroom was reimagined for easier access to the backyard’s hot tub. Fixtures were strategically rearranged to optimize space and enhance the room’s openness.

The laundry room was redesigned to maximize storage. An essential feature for any home.

The clients’ passion for geology and natural wood inspired the final finishes. Carefully selected natural stone was prominently featured in every room, adding a personal and earthy tough to the design.

A master bathroom remodel that drew inspiration from the cool blues, browns and greens of the local Humboldt Bay.

The bathroom design opened up the floor plan to allow for a more spacious and accessible space. The new configuration dramatically revised the layout, but without going beyond the existing footprint or changing the original windows.

The clients picked a mixture of finishes that lightened up the space. Small details, like a unique tile, added a personal touch.

A new detached garage and agriculture building is getting wrapped up. First time Cairns Architecture got to research and design around the needs of not only the owner, but their chickens and goats.

An existing kitchen was brought new life with a tile design and installation for a countertop and backsplash.

People are often hesitant to use tile in a kitchen. However, this project utilized large format tiles for an economical kitchen counter that can resist heat and stains.

A bright tile backsplash contrasts the existing cabinets and brings out the warmth of the wood.
