🐔 How to Recognize a Healthy Laying Hen 🥚

Keeping productive hens starts with knowing what “healthy” looks like.

Here’s a quick guide every poultry raiser should know:

✅ Active & Alert
Healthy hens are lively, always moving, scratching, and reacting to their surroundings.

✨ Shiny, Clean Feathers
Smooth, glossy feathers with no bald spots (except during molting).

👀 Bright Eyes & Red Comb
Clear eyes and a bright red comb/wattles are signs of good health and strong egg production.

💪 Strong Body Condition
Firm breast, sturdy legs, and no swelling or injuries.

🥚 Consistent Egg Production
Regular laying with strong, well-formed eggs.

💩 Normal Droppings
Firm, not watery or bloody.

🌬️ Easy Breathing
No coughing, sneezing, or unusual sounds.

⚠️ Watch Out For:
Lethargy, pale comb, messy feathers, diarrhea, or sudden drop in egg production.

📌 Healthy hens = Better eggs + Better profits!

One chicken can do a lot more around the yard than most people realize, and that is part of why I love having them around 🐔
🍎 They help clean up some kitchen scraps, scratch through mulch, and turn all that busy little movement into something useful.
🐛 I’ve found they can be great for bug control too, especially when they are allowed to work an area at the right time.
🌿 Their manure is valuable, but I never use it fresh around plants. I let it compost down first so it is safer for the garden.
🚧 The biggest tip is management, because chickens are helpful until they dig where you did not want them digging.
💛 Used the right way, they can be part of the garden team and not just animals in the backyard.
