We’ve been busy! 💪 We started our internship this month and the whole team has been working together to move our youngest seedlings to the nursery site, tilling & compacting new rows, covering seedlings up to protect against surprise frost (!), and mixing lots of soil to…guess what? Up-pot, up-pot, up-pot! We have 10,000 white spruce seedlings the community helped us seed last year that we are transferring to bigger containers. 😮‍💨

🌼 Meanwhile, our seed collectors have been scouting sites and recording plant phenology to make sure we are on-track for securing seeds for this summer and pitching in at the nursery too.

🌿 The leaves are back—and so is the nursery! The team has been busy over the past week bringing our summer operation back to life: erecting the hoop house, bringing in soil and water, potting willow cuttings, and waking up the plants that overwintered. We are so excited to get back to it!

This weekend, come out to the Georgeson Botanical Garden and see all of the letters and mailboxes on display together! The garden is only just waking up, but the trails are free of snow and Bohemian Waxwings are hanging out in the trees--stop by!

A free native plant identification walk is planned in Delta Junction in May for Alaska Native Plant Month.

The walk, from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, is co-hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, Partners for Progress in Delta and the Salcha-Delta Soil and Water Conservation District. Location details will be provided upon registration.

Guides Jeff Mason and Brenna Wells will show participants how to identify common native plants that thrive in Delta Junction, how and why to incorporate them into local gardens and what benefits they will bring to participants, pollinators and Alaska wildlife.

Participants are encouraged to ask questions, share observations, use field guides or apps, and bring a camera or notebook. Participants may take home a few cultivated native plants from the SWCD nursery to add to their landscape.

May weather can be unpredictable, and participants are asked to dress appropriately and wear good shoes.

Registration is required. Contact Chris Lyon at [email protected] or 907-895-4605.

For more information, contact Eve Karczmarczyk at [email protected] or 907-895-4215.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Accommodation requests related to a disability should be made five business days in advance to Alda Norris at [email protected] or 907-474-7120. Language access services, such as interpretation or translation of vital information, will be provided free of charge to individuals with limited English proficiency upon request to [email protected].

🌱 This season's first crop of seedlings are on their way! We have sown ten species so far, including blueberry, cranberry, bearberry, and cinquefoil. These seeds were collected last summer from Wickersham Dome, Ski Land, and the Chatanika River area. 🫐

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, in collaboration with the Alaska Native Plant Society, is hosting a series of free webinars to highlight native plants and animals and the challenges they face.

All webinars will be from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesdays during May, which is Alaska Native Plant Month. Register using the online form or visit https://bit.ly/NativePlantMonth.

On May 6, Todd Eskelin, a biologist at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, will feature rufous hummingbirds, an important pollinator that is in decline. Eskelin will talk about current research into how rufous hummingbirds interact with native plants and what is needed to expand the hummingbirds’ range.

On May 13, Lisa Strecker, with UAF’s ethnobotany program, and Jessica Newton, of the Kenaitze Tribe, will talk about how people develop relationships with plants that tend to grow well in human-impacted habitats. They will focus on how people can interact with plants for holistic well-being through the lens of Alaska Native plant traditions and ethnobotany.

On May 20, Maddie D**g, with Pollinator Partnership, will review the two new ecoregional planting guides for Alaska. She will discuss how the guides were developed in collaboration with Alaska-based plant and pollinator experts. The guides provide targeted native plant recommendations that support pollinators throughout the growing season.

On May 27, Gino Graziano, Cooperative Extension invasive plants instructor, will explain how some wildflower seed mixes can carry varieties that can spread beyond where they were planted and, in some cases, become invasive. He will discuss which species to look out for and avoid in wildflower mixes.
