My name is Michael McDaniel, and I am a Bonsai Artist.
My practice in Bonsai started at a pretty low point in my life. Back then I was two years out of college with a mass communications degree and struggling to start my career; Most days my time was spent either working at a part time job that was going no where or in my parent’s basement trying to drown out my disappointment in myself and the reality of my situation within the confines of video games.
Eventually to make something of the abundance of time I had, I began to look into hobbies. I had always been interested in art; was a painter and a fencer for a time. But one day surfing Facebook, an Atlanta Botanical Garden post came up on the news feed and it was about Bonsai and I instantly fell in love with the trees displayed. I said to myself “Huh, I want to learn how to do that.” Soon after, and a few google searches later, I was at my local Lowes and bought my first Junipers.
One died but miraculously the other lived and from there I fell completely down the rabbit hole. After that life picked up a bit, I moved, finally got my big break and started my career in broadcast television, got married to my best friend of 10 happy years and I’m still at it, practicing Bonsai. Now just a few years later I have my own nursery and just started my Yamidori collection from Andy Smith’s trees and I’m even getting formal training from one of Nashville’s best, John Wall!
