There are certain pieces that become less about furniture and more about storytelling. This was one of them.

Inspired by antique Delft tilework and old European interiors, this antique commode was transformed layer by layer to create the illusion of aged ceramic tile, complete with softly worn grout lines, faded blue detailing, and a slate-inspired top meant to feel collected over generations.

Every motif was painted by hand after what was probably an unhealthy amount of Delft tile research. The goal was never perfection — it was character, age, and that feeling of finding something special tucked away in an old European home.

This piece challenged me creatively in all the best ways, and honestly… I may never look at grout lines the same again.

One of my favorite ways to update an antique without stripping away its soul is with a paint wash instead of fully covering the wood.

This Victorian piece already had incredible carved detailing, so I wanted the grain and age of the chestnut to still come through while softening the overall look and making it feel more current for today’s homes. The light paint wash warmed everything up while still letting all that natural character show.

I intentionally left the wood darker behind the carved center details to create contrast and really make those architectural elements stand out. Sometimes the best part of a piece is already there—it just needs a little shifting to finally be noticed.

I also swapped out the original Victorian hardware. While beautiful in its own way, it felt too ornate alongside all of the carving. The updated hardware gives the piece a cleaner balance and allows the wood detailing to become the focal point instead of competing with it.

Pieces like this are why I’ll always love antiques. The craftsmanship is already there—you’re just helping people see it again.
