Honestly you would be looking at $800-$1300 for labor and materials cost and a minimum of 2 days work for the taping and bedding, coats of mud to dry,texture, paint and insulation. Also depends on where you are located. But yes all of that sheetrock should be cut out where you still see the water staining. Also need to make sure the leak is fixed before completing this project.

Got quoted $500 for this repair—does that sound right?

The damaged area came out to around 2×4 ft once cut back, plus about a foot down on two connected walls.

Also in a higher cost area, so I’m curious if that price (materials extra) is reasonable.
