🌺 My zinnias are still blooming despite the dry weather we’ve been having lately! It’s time to close down the summer garden and see what I can get planted for fall. 🍂

I’ll clean up my summer garden by removing vegetation that isn’t producing anymore and clearing dead leaf debris. Then I’ll top it off with a layer of compost and let it rest until spring, when I’ll top it off again with more compost!

The lazy folks’ guide to preserving summer vegetables:
•Step 1: Wash your veggies!
•Step 2: Dry your veggies!
•Step 3: Bag up your veggies! Make sure to remove as much air as you can and arrange in a single layer.
•Step 4: Put the bag in the freezer!

It’s as simple as that! I’ll get these tomatoes out next time we make a chili or stew and just dump them in the pot. The skins will naturally release as they cook and I’ll pick them out with tongs. How do you preserve your summer veg?

😎 As the temperatures soar this week, keeping your garden hydrated is crucial! Here are some tips to beat the heat and keep your plants thriving:

1️⃣ Water deeply early in the morning or late in the evening to minimize evaporation. Deeply=15-20 seconds per plant, if hand watering.
2️⃣ Use mulch like garden straw to retain moisture and keep soil cool.
3️⃣ Consider drip irrigation or a soaker hose for more efficient watering.
4️⃣ Check soil moisture regularly and adjust watering accordingly. This means you might be watering every day!

Let’s keep our gardens green and flourishing this summer! 🌿💧

Do your plants look wilty and sad during the heat of the day? Don’t worry! This usually means they are preserving energy, especially if they perk back up when the sun goes down. Be sure not to water plants during the hottest parts of the day; wait until evening or early morning to give your plants a drink!

This Fertilizer Friday is brought to you by: COMPOST! The easiest way to feed your garden that involves no measuring and minimal effort (including low risk to your plants) is to add an inch of compost to the tops of the beds, then apply water. Repeat every 2-3 weeks. This compost is from the city of Fayetteville!
