These industrious bees are more than just pollinators. The carpenter bee is a homebody, returning to the very same wooden tunnels it was born in year after year. As each generation expands the family home, a single tunnel can become a complex network, threatening the structural integrity of your deck or eaves over time.

Carpenter bees don't consume the wood they bore into; they simply excavate it to create tunnels for their nests. The sawdust-like material you see on the ground beneath their holes is called "frass," which they push out of the tunnel as they dig.

Meet one of my favorite, native spring bloomers: CORAL BEAN!

If you're looking for something low maintenance & marvelous, look no further!

You can spot these on the side of the road under the shade of grand oak trees or in the coastal plain growing in sandy soil.

The showy scarlet tubular flowers are an invitation for hummingbirds to come feast on it's nectar.

🌹 This shady little oasis has come a long way! The roses are going bananas, amaryllis are starting to bloom, the orange begonias added a fun pop of color and the tractor seat plants have filled in very nicely.

Can we just take a moment to admire this native azalea?

If you have plenty of shade, moisture, and a touch of acidity, native azaleas make a lovely understory. They come in colors from bright red and orange, to a soft yellow and pink, white. I like to mix and match a little bit but the 'Florida Flame' native azalea is especially striking with its orange hues.

β˜€οΈWarmer days are coming!

πŸ€” I keep checking the forecast, and with no frost in sight, I am left pretty confused over here as we learn to navigate planting in what's now zone 9.

πŸ“ My strawberries are producing months early, I am continuing to sow wildflower seeds and lettuce seeds every other week.

🌺 Walking around the neighborhood I saw a tulip magnolia in full bloom and the magenta azaleas are well on their way too!

🌱 After falling in love with gardening I have a new found appreciation for Spring and the life it brings.

β˜€οΈ We had such a nice visit with one of our clients downtown yesterday. She is a native plant enthusiast (wahoo!) who is going for a cottage garden feel in her charming backyard.

🏑 Cottage gardens can be hard to attain in our hot humid summers but she is off to a great start!

Some of my favorite native plants to include in a cottage garden would have to be... πŸ₯ Drumroll please... πŸ₯

🌻 Cabbage Leaf Coneflower (Rudbeckia maxima) This beauty reaches heights up to 10 feet and is the perfect backstory in the landscape. Finches love to eat the seeds in the fall/winter.

πŸ’œ Blazing Star (Liatris spicata) A native purple fall blooming prairie flower that attracts tons of butterflies and bees. It gets to be 4 feet tall and spreads well over time. Grassy texture throughout most of the season prior to blooming.

🐝 Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpura) or any color of echinacea! I love love love this plant and it's medicine. Reaches 2-3 feet tall and loves full sun but will tolerate part shade. Will attract butterflies, native bees, and songbirds love to eat these seeds as well!

πŸͺ± If you have a more clay consistency in your soil, all of the above will tolerate clay soil as well as our average sandy loam.
