Big news in Everglades Restoration: The next step for Tamiami Trail is underway and construction is finally happening!

Starting this week, the Florida Department of Transportation in coordination with Everglades National Park will begin construction of the remaining 6.7 miles of the Tamiami Trail Next Steps Phase 2 Project.

This project will allow for an additional 75 to 80 billion gallons of water a year to flow south into the Everglades National Park and Florida Bay.

The project work includes building six new bridges, seven improved culverts, and elevating sections of State Road (SR) 90/Tamiami Trail. The project is estimated to cost $53 million and is expected to be completed in spring 2024, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.

Please note, it will be necessary to close travel lanes and use flaggers to build the road safely. Lane closures will be posted on the department’s project page. Work will be done in stages to minimize construction-related impacts. Use caution when traveling through construction zones.
