Language warning, because....

Yeah, tomatoes!! Boooo, squash vine borers! 😆 🤣

You win some, you lose some. What can I say. I'm glad I pulled the tomatoes when I did, though, otherwise it would be yet another week without any slicers. Le sigh.

The colors in this morning's basket are so beautiful together! The hibiscus is blooming, got a couple more Queen of the Night cocktail tomatoes, and the yellow pear tomatoes are looking more like miniature gourds 😆 🤣 Fine by me. because no matter the shape, they're delicious 😋

Ok, so I keep saying they're all a "type" of hibiscus, when I should be saying, they're all RELATED to hibiscus. Cotton, roselle, okra, and hibiscus are all in the mallow family! I would guess, cousins, not siblings 🤪

This family also includes Rose of Sharon. and hollyhock! When you take a look at their leaf structure, and their flowers, it's easy to see the similarities....and it's quite fascinating, I think. I mean, when we think of cotton fields, we don't usually associate the plant with those big, beautiful, tropical plants🌺🌺

And now you know!! Go, Joe! 😆

Nice little harvest this morning. Thought i got all the radicchio the other day but, SURPRISE! Found some hiding under the melons 😊
I wish I had more tamarillos because these little things are DELICIOUS!

The garden towers are loaded with peppers & baby eggplant....that the critters haven't found yet, thankfully, and was able to pick my first non-cherry type tomato of the season - a cocktail tomato called, Queen of the Night. Ain't she purty?!?

Tons of exciting things going on around here! Tomorrow, is the kick-off of our food preservation and intro canning classes, at Garland Square's, Pickle Party! The classes have been sold out for a few weeks with a waiting list, but don't let that stop you from coming out & enjoying everything pickle, and 'relishing' in all the fun!

Also, our website is officially finished & I will be posting an official launch once I get past this week & all the goings on, so keep an out out!

Finished harvesting the rest of the radicchio, turnips, and rutabaga last night. Time to fill in all the spaces with more heat-set tomatoes that I started last month, Swiss Chard, and lots and lots of black-eyed peas!

Everything is so full & lush (thank you weird TX monsoon spring), and it seems the varmints have given me reprieve for a while, thankfully!! My spiny garden helpers are digging nests for a whole new generation of natural pest-control, and the pollinators are EVERYWHERE!

It's hard to believe that this overgrown side alley next to my workshop/garage, used to just be a dumping ground of debris. Hell, I didn't even know that driveway & concrete pad were there until I tried jamming a shovel in the dirt, lol.

Just a few, short years later, and we have a beautiful & functional, compact garden area filled with tomatoes, beans, peppers, cucumbers, flowers, herbs, and greens...in a space less than 6 feet wide!

P.S. - the pup was compensated fairly for her role in, Sleeping on the Job - a Foray into the Life of a Garden Dog; pursuant to her rights as a SAG-AFTRA, member 😆 🤣

Every year, I say, I'm never planting squash, again! And, every year, I plant them squash, 😆 🤣

This year, I planted a Blue Hubbard squash as a squash vine borer trap crop, about 20 feet away. I also waited until late in the season rather than planting in spring. Fun fact - did you know that when your chicory/endive is in full bloom, that's when the SVB is actively flying around laying eggs? My endive has been blooming for a couple weeks now & is starting to fade, so hopefully I timed it right & those dastardly menaces will be gone when the squash pops up.

Other tricks I'm pulling out of my hat - planting parthenocarpic (self-pollinating) squash, and keeping them under an insect cover. I also treated the entire yard & garden with borer-eating nematodes, in early spring.

With any luck, this will work & I can share the method, in detail, so all you southern gardeners can be zuchinni-rich like those yanks up north 😀 😉

Summer is HOT. Summer in Texas is something of nightmares. Ever wondered what it's like to have an afternoon in triple digits & for it to continue well after the sun has set? Me either, but TX insisted I find out & smacked me right in the chesticsles, the first summer I spent here. Factor in, trying to grow food, let alone ANYTHING green, and you have a challenge even the most bold, risk-seeking adventurer wouldn't take on...that is, of course, unless you come armed with the knowledge of what can not only survive, but THRIVE in this barren, hellscape.

In addition to the greens I used, other options for summer greens include;

Katuk
Malabar spinach
Okinawa spinach
Perpetual spinach
Swiss Chard
Squash leaves (Yes! Winter squash leaves are best)
Purslane (this one is probably in your lawn right now!)
Perrenial arugula (not the annual)
Garden Sorrel (completely different than the Caribbean sorrel which is in the hibiscus family)
Moringa (leaves and pods)

With soooo many options, there's no reason you can't have delicious, nutritious salads all summer long!
