I'll be honest. I keep my phone on the table at dinner parties. But before you judge me, hear me out.

I'm not scrolling. I'm not texting. I'm photographing my friend's gorgeous platter she spent all afternoon making. I'm capturing the flowers in the candlelight. I'm snapping a picture of her laughing so she can see how beautiful she looked.

The phone on the table isn't the problem. The intention behind it is what matters.

You don’t need to clean every corner, cook everything from scratch, or create a Pinterest-perfect evening. You need a plan, a little preparation, and enough breathing room to actually enjoy your guests.

Because the goal isn’t to impress people—it’s to make them feel welcome. ❤️

The women in my family didn't teach me recipes. They taught me how to feed people.

There's a difference. Recipes live on index cards. Feeding people lives in your bones. It's knowing that someone at the table needs a little extra tonight. It's the way my grandmother never measured a thing but somehow every pot was perfect.

I didn't learn that from a cookbook. I learned it standing next to her, watching her hands move through a kitchen like she'd done it a thousand times. Because she had.

Every time I pick up a knife and start chopping, I feel them. My grandmother. My mother. The women who never called it hosting. They just called it Tuesday.

If I were teaching you to host from scratch, we wouldn’t start with the perfect table, a complicated menu, or a house that looks like a magazine.

We’d start with confidence.

After more than 40 years of hosting, I’ve learned that the best hosts aren’t the ones who do everything perfectly. They’re the ones who know how to plan simply, prepare ahead, pivot when something goes wrong, and—most importantly—make people feel welcome.

So if you’re new to hosting, or you’ve always thought you’re “just not good at it,” consider this your starting point.

You don’t need more stuff.
You don’t need a bigger house.
You don’t need to wait for the perfect occasion.

You just need to open the door.

Host with intention, not perfection. ❤️

Here's what I know now: the best hostess in the room is the one who took care of herself before her guests arrived.

For 30 years I poured into everyone else first. My patients. My family. Every single person who sat at my table. I never stopped to check if there was anything left for me.

Then my doctor said one word: osteopenia. My bones were thinning. The woman who hosts everything almost couldn't hold herself up.

I found Mei | Strength + Weight Loss Coach for Midlife Women and picked up a barbell. Not to look different. To make sure I'm still standing at the head of my table 30 years from now.

Strength training hopefully reverses my osteopenia. Stronger bones. Lower fracture risk. I'm building back what I almost lost.

An open door never asked for a clean house first.

In my younger days I spent years waiting until everything was "ready" before I'd invite someone over. The floors needed mopping. The guest room needed new pillows. The kitchen counter needed to be clear of whatever project I had going on that week.

And while I was waiting for perfect, I was missing people.

The truth I keep learning over and over is that people don't walk through your door to inspect your home. They walk through because you opened it. That's the whole invitation. That's enough.

So if your house is a little lived-in today, if the dishes are still in the sink and the throw pillows are on the floor, open the door anyway.

My mother's dear friend Julia did not have daughters of her own, so when I was a little girl, spending the day in her kitchen was the ultimate treat.

Julia taught me so much about hosting, flavor, and how making something from scratch is really just an act of love. Her vintage vermicelli pasta salad has been on my summer entertaining menu for four decades, and it never fails.

I'll let you in on a little secret. The prettiest tables I've set started with the messiest kitchens an hour before guests walked in.
