Today is a hard day… Of the two heroes on our farm, nobody was braver than Boba. Nila would go after coyotes with Boba, but Boba was our superstar. Boba didn’t even tolerate a raccoon on HER turf, and when it came to defending her people or her herd, she was fearless. My son, who usually gets overwhelmed by doggie antics, was closest to her, because she was a gentle soul outside of guard duty. She never jumped around him or acted hyper, and that allowed their bond to be as deep as a boy can be with his dog. Yesterday afternoon, she was patrolling as usual. This morning, I found her under the barn in her favorite spot when she didn’t come for breakfast, and she had passed. We understand there is additional risk with having any working dog, that’s why we give them the best life we possibly can in exchange for their service. It doesn’t make it hurt any less, though. Our hearts are still broken, and we are not ready to say goodbye.
