Taking the additional effort to not just find the average hanging scroll that could be found anywhere in Japan or low quality items is not an easy job. One has to go through thousands of different scrolls to not only find unique scrolls or interesting items. Some antique hanging scrolls contain a unique story just as people have different stories to tell of their life experiences. Some scrolls may have questionable signatures or might be anonymous, yet the style may not only be pleasing but also the history that the scroll may have experienced should be noted. Fine Japanese hanging scrolls contain information like authentication writings within a box lid, letters, authentication slips, and other unique items and these scrolls not only add more to the argument of a painting but provide one view for the collector to visualize how the artist or individual who saw the painting and added their opinions to the piece. In addition, the mountings used for the scroll and the hidden art of restoration should be recognized. Without the technicians restoring paintings and calligraphies, these pieces would have not been cared for and valued up to now.
