“Maple Wilt” is a common disease that is plaguing Maple trees across Michigan. The disease is caused by the fungus Verticillium Wilt and is introduced through the tree's vascular system by contaminated groundwater, soil or from tree-to-tree.

The disease starts in the trees root system and spreads up through the trunk into the upper branches. The first sign of Maple wilt is when the tips of the tree begin to yellow and wilt. The leaves of the trees will looked scorched and will brown. Eventually the limbs will begin to die.

It is recommended to give your tree a good water and fertilizer if you suspect you tree is affected. There is no chemical to cure the disease. Some trees may beat the disease or slow it's process if all affected limbs and branches are properly removed. Complete removal of the tree may be recommended to prevent the risk of spreading the infection to other trees.
